Taverns were funny places. Open the small swinging doors, and one might be greeted by sudden silence and the ugly, cold glares of its patrons, particularly toward newcomers. This has happened a few times today during a certain stranger's visit, but when it was seen that it was a familiar customer, the ambient pandering continued. In the case of the stranger, the unfriendly stares were given, yet they dissipated after an intimidating aura pervaded the atmosphere.
This was not a visitor to gawk at.
The stranger sat in the corner of the tavern, covered in a linen shroud. There were those who would take a quick glance in that direction, only to sheepishly turn themselves away after accidentally meeting eyes.
A barmaid inched by the visitor and inquired for a drink to be served.
"Water," replied a rough voice, "Just water."
With a timid bow, the waitress hurried away. Some time after, the tavern's usual ambience resumed.

A day in a foreign land went just about as expected for Grant. Barring any incidental run ins he had with the local populace he had no luck whatsoever. A sigh escaped his lips as he stood briefly with his eyes closed in the middle of a street. Regardless, he knew he had no business loitering about and that nothing would come of feeling sorry for one’s self. A place was needed, one where he could collect his thoughts momentarily.
Perhaps the side of a fountain would do. Maybe a nearby bench. “Nay,” he thought. Being unfamiliar with the residents of the town, he would run the risk of being mugged by lowering his guard out in the open.
Ahead was stood a tavern- appropriate enough for him to catch a breather. As he entered the tavern his eyes darted about for a place to seat himself. Seeing as most of the people were crowded away from a certain corner of the place, he sauntered toward the stranger unassumingly.
“Is this seat occupied?” He asked the stranger with a small bow of his head.
The hooded person took a good, hard look at the fellow. Tall, winsome, and... distinctively non-native.
That was all well and good... perhaps he would make amiable company. One could never tell in this town. Anyone could be anything.
"No," was a simple reply.
The stranger leaned into the table with yellow eyes locked onto the middle of his forehead. His garb... was he a butler? A servant of some sloppy noble?
Oh, how absolutely irritating.
A sordid memory surfaced, yet it was quickly stifled for the sake of an open mind. Grant

The ends of his lips curved upwards mildly into a small smile. The young man lowered himself onto the seat with a little huff of minute weariness. “Thank you,” he nodded his head once in appreciation. “I hope you do not mind that I take it.” An inquisitive brow was raise as his gaze locked with the stranger’s own. The person did not seem too aggressive to him, nor rude for that matter. Nevertheless, the sight was alienating.
The feeling resided, but staying awkwardly silent would do nothing to aid him; much less make the situation more comfortable. Therefore, he decided to make do with some sort of conversation. ‘The sky is blue’ was a phrase that crossed his mind. Then again that would be immensely awkward. Forgoing the thought, he spoke.
“My apologies for the social ineptitude,” he stated outright. “I am afraid I have little knowledge or any sort of contact within this land.”
"Knowledge profits a person for a season, but wisdom lasts forever."
The voice was full, clear, and feminine with almost a sage-like overtone. The tavern quieted briefly, and some heads turned to the two of them.
The stranger leaned over the table, "... But if it is knowledge you seek, you are in Cykrensia, city of merchants and music." Her head lowered down, "And you? You are a foreigner from a strange land that has come at a troublesome time." The woman's eyes narrowed, "... Surely you do not wish to add to the sorrows of this land?" Grant

Of all the emotions that Grant had felt during the course of his first day in a new land, ‘mildly offended’ could now be added to the list. The young man was not quite sure how to react to the stranger’s question. He did not think that he appeared to look like someone who would cause problems for the natives. It was true that the largest his motive he had at that point was to face strong adversaries, though he never aimed to outright hurt any being whilst independent of strong provocation.
His head tilted slightly to the right as his once inquisitive brow descended. Usually it would not take long for him to structure his sentences, but the stranger’s question was all too abnormal.
“I am unable to see why any person would wish to do such a thing.” Grant replied bluntly, albeit quieter as the person's voice had seemed to attract the attention of some of the other folk.
"Hmmmm..." the woman hummed with a low timbre, "... I wouldn't have expected you to need an explanation. This land is tainted with the blood of the guilty and innocent. There are more children who know how to pick up a sword than adults that can reason with their fellow humans." She leaned her head to the side, "Ah, but what am I saying... I can't see the future with places and locations."
The woman slanted back in her chair and gave him a leery stare, "... Forgive my straightforward question. Why did you come to Nohr?" Grant

The term ‘fellow humans’ felt out of place to Grant. It was unusual for him to hear another human refer to his species as such. This only caused the person to have more doubts about the stranger’s race. Even so, the species of his fellow conversationalist did not matter to him. What mattered to him was that he was having said conversation and that kept him content for the time being.
“All is forgiven and to be completely sincere,” Grant shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly with a small pause. “I am trying to answer that question myself.”
The smile he once bore faded as he faced the person directly. His expression was not one of great sorrow or disdain. Much more of a blank slate of which only the eyes of a man burdened with emptiness resided.
“I suppose if anything at all, I hope to make the land a better place.” He uttered in a meek voice. Only seconds after, he closed his eyes- grinning once more. Grant was not one to burden other's with grief, regardless of what he felt. “Though I shan’t bother you with a ‘holier than thou’ attitude.”
"Hmmmmmm..." the woman reclined on the table toward him, "... I see... you come here, hardly knowing the reason why except to make the land a better place? I've seen many like you in my years... but not all of them share the same vision of 'better.' So..." she gave him a nod, "I would ask that you describe... 'better.'"
A slender arm, bound in linen, reached out of her cloak and supported her head. "Entreat this lonely wanderer to your definition. I will not judge you." Grant

“I assume the term ‘better’ is subjective to everyone.” Grant nodded once more. This was a topic he could get behind. Of course, there were no right or wrong answers to be had- only different perspectives on different subjects. “Perhaps it might be childish of me to state this, but a society where none would suffer.”
“Indeed, I am well aware that my ideal is impossible.” He paused, placing his palms together. “Though, if I can stop the blood of the innocent from being spilt as well as redeem those who are misguided. . .”
He was amiable, she could give him that. To end the shedding of blood to those above suspicion is a very common answer... but the redemption of the misguided? That in itself is a different ideal considering that many others would crush those in rebellion to their desires.
"Heh... heheheh..." she chuckled, "I spoke before that I would not judge you, but it's a hard habit of mine to kill. Your words have satisfied my curiosity."
Her arm turned to him and her hand opened, "I am known as Hada. Who are you?" Grant

Beyond any other plausible emotion, he was confused. Grant was undecided if she was mocking him with her laugh or genuinely interested by his values. In spite of what he felt, it would be very rude to not accept her greeting. He knew it as such and would not dare to do otherwise.
The outstretched hand was greeted with a firm grip of Grant’s own. “Grant.” He stated aptly. “Not much of a last name there.” His expression seemed to lighten as he shook her hand.
“It is pleasant to be acquainted with you Miss Hada.”
Grant released her hand shortly thereafter. He continued to stare at her in his puzzled state. Too many questions swam around in his mind for him to ask one and not make himself look like an idiot. Consequently, he stayed silent- simply looking at the person.
The hand withdrew back into the cloak and they sat in silence for a brief moment.
"So," spoke Hada with a bob of her head, "What's the story of you coming here, hm? For a man dressed as a butler... do you seek to become some fellow's servant?"
The waitress from earlier came to their side and quietly put down a cup of water in front of her.
"Oh, before you go," the woman said to her, "Grant, would you like anything to drink?"

“Water please.” Grant waved his right briefly to signal the waitress that he was finished. As tempted as he was to see what the local menu offered, he knew he had to make the most out of whatever resources was available to him. Spending it on items of leisure would do little to help him in any future scenarios- something he knew all to well.
After the waitress left, he began to speak. “My story. . .” He shook his head lightly with a snicker. “I am afraid to say that my story is not as impressive as any other man.” His two hands locked each other in a grasp gently as the short merriment died down. “Perhaps I shall tell you another time.”
“As for your second question.” The man brought a lone index finger beneath his chin. He himself needed a second to convey what he wanted to say properly. “I suppose in a sense, I am indeed.” Having stated as such- he lowered his finger. “However, I am not so much interested in a high or even regular pay as I am to the opportunity to see what the land has to offer me.”
“Though, I do not expect that to come so I shall keep my hopes low.”
"Grant. I recommend that you do not seek a master among the nobles of Nohr," spoke Hada with a little snarl, "I summarize them with a single word: ingrates. I can't imagine why amiable people like yourself would want to work for thankless aristocrats other than to have money thrown in their faces." She cleared her throat, "... I apologize. From experience I have drawn this conclusion and would rather not have you feel that pain."
