The FoD20 Plan
This is a checks system that is focused on RP flavor, to be used solely in the land of Fodlan. Players use a 20-count die plus a modifier based on their character’s stats when they chose a class.
First off, what are checks?
Checks are a way to ensure a character is capable of performing a task. If your character is to perform a feat, the dice will determine if your character can actually do it. This is a typical method of gameplay seen in Dungeons & Dragons and was the direct inspiration for this plan.
Secondly, why the checks system?
Our characters are living and breathing individuals (unless they are dead), and they have their strengths and their weaknesses. A character who is physically weak but strong in the arcane can’t exactly lift heavy objects, and someone who lifts dumbbells for a living may not be well-versed in bending spoons with their mind... but what if they need to perform the duties of the other? Those actions may still be possible!
Moreover, if someone would like to know how effective they are at curing wounds, or how skillful they are at dancing around traps, they can determine that with the roll of the die. Every aspect of a character can be tested!
As an example:
Edelgard’s Stats (Ported to Indignation’s Stat System)
[HP 29] [STR 13] [MAG 6] [SKL 6] [SPD 8] [DEF 6] [RES 4]
Edelgard has come across a large boulder blocking the path of the patrol!
“Nothing shall keep us from completing our task!” she declares.
So, she attempts to roll the boulder out of the way.
Edelgard is going to move a heavy object, therefore she must perform a STR Check!
Edelgard’s STR is 13. Half that, and her modifier is 6.5, but we must round it down to 6.
Now Edelgard’s player must roll a d20, then add a 6 to that roll.
How do we know that she is successful? For now, if she rolls above unlucky number 13, she will have success. Otherwise, she will fail the check and cannot attempt it again until the next time she posts.
In the mix is Natural 1’s and Natural 20s (Nat 1 and Nat 20, respectively). Rolling a Nat 1 means you had rolled a 1, causing a critical failure. This critical failure can be detrimental to your character and is typically determined by a staff member (for now, yours truly). On the other hand, Nat 20 is a critical success, and your character can perform an incredible feat.
So, how do we summarize this system?
STR: strength-based actions, such as wielding a weapon larger than one’s self
MAG: magic or reason-based actions, such as focusing a magic attack or using a reason-based tome of higher rank
SKL: dexterous or skill-based actions, also determines if you can hit something or do a performance. Also determines your ability to speak well to others
SPD: the ability to react quickly to an incoming attack and dodge
DEF: constitution and defense-based actions, such as to keep your balance after a heavy blow or standing your ground against a torrent of water.
RES: faith-based actions, such as the ability to heal or use faith-based tome of higher rank
(Copy/Paste this somewhere!)
Formula for Calculating Modifiers:
(STATS) (Divided by) (2) = (MODIFIER)
Ex. (STR 13) / 2 = 6 (round down)
Formula for Calculating Rolls:
(d20 die result) + (MOD) = (TOTAL RESULT)
Formula for Determining Success
(TOTAL RESULT) (Greater than >) (13) : Success
(TOTAL RESULT) (Less than <) (13) : Failure
Ex. 23 > 13 = Success
This system may look familiar to some people, and that’s because it’s heavily based off of Dungeons & Dragons. Please post your feedback in this thread and let me know what we can do to improve it. Please keep in mind that this system is made to be simple enough for folks to work with if they want to use it.
If it’s already like “yo, Ocean, this is kind of complicated,” let me know, too.
