The air inside the library was stale, and the particles of dust so numerous they could actually be seen floating about when the light shined upon them just right.
The place was in clear need of a dusting, and the by now familiar humming of the sunny janitor of Garreg Mach informed anyone near by that it was very much being taken care of.
The thick frame of the blonde man stood by the bookshelves, a large pile of books nestled and balanced on the crook of one arm as he reached for yet another text with his free hand, humming that tune that only he seemed to know.
It wasn't really his job to reorganize the texts- it was the librarian's, and whichever student had been unfortunate enough to be tasked with helping them.
But it couldn't be helped! Intolerable amounts of dust gathered behind the books if they were left alone for too long. And the lovely nun who led choir practice at the cathedral was allergic to dust- she could often be found in the library searching for new songs & hymns to teach to the choir. It wouldn't do for her day to be ruined due to teary eyes and an unshakable sneeze.
No, for her sake, and all others who suffered of allergies, this needed to be done promptly!
So it fell upon him.
The blonde man placed the stack of books onto one of the tables carefully before immediately going back to the shelves and beginning to pile yet more texts. If someone looked around the place, they would notice multiple similar stacks set on the other tables of the library- and the fact that many shelves had already been emptied out, letting everyone see just how dusty and dirty they were on the inside.
"♪Hmm, Hmm-Hmm... ♪" He cheerfully hummed to himself the entire time, somewhat glad the place was empty. He didn't like breaking the rules of the monastery; so long as there was no one around, his humming didn't bother anyone, so no rules were being broken, right?

Day-offs were precious things, especially when one has been training and growing unruly students. There was more than time and effort that was being used up, energy and the proverbial fuse had begun to wear down. Busyness grew, sleep dwindled, and mothering a bright and wide-eyed child became more difficult.
Nevertheless, far be it for the nuns to completely take over the raising of a prodigy. She was, in fact, beginning to grow envious of the time he spent with others, even if they were enriching him in the knowledge of their current sanctuary.
That will not do. Today I will spoil him with my attention as much as I can.
——
And so we come to the present.
A woman walked down the hall with child in her arms, one who clung securely around her neck. She was a woman of fair skin, with golden locks that cascaded from her head to the waist. Her eyes were like fire, sitting within a striking complexion that would have drawn much attention if the halls were filled and occupants less pious. The dress she wore was not at all her regular officer uniform, rather, it was modest and unassuming of her position in the monastery.
As for the child in her arms, he was young, appearing to be three or four, with a tender face, and curious eyes of similar quality of his carrier. His unkempt hair was a darker brown, although there was an unusual tuft on the front of his bangs that shared the same hue as the woman.
“You like reading, right, Lucas?” “Yeh.” “You probably can read the books better than I can, hm? I’m still learning much of the words.” “Still learning lots.” “Hoho, yes, there is a lot to learn about this place. Are your teachers nice to you?” “Yeh! Everyone nice. I’m nice, too.” “That’s my boy. Always be nice to people you meet! We’re going to the library, so what is the number one rule?” “Hush-hush.” “Good, always be hush-hush in a library.”
At this moment, they quietly turned the next corner into grand archive and, much to her surprise, found only one attendant here.
Actually, it was less of an attendant and more of the monastery janitor... and he was humming. It was a sweet sound, not one to complain over due to the fact that there was not a soul to disturb. There really is no room to be harsh, yes, it is obvious that he was the only one here before they arrived.
“... Lucas, what was the rule?” “... Hush-hush?” “Yes. Hush-hush.”
The woman cleared her throat softly, then began a beeline directly toward the young janitor. When she was within earshot of a whisper, she murmured, “Mr. Étaín, your humming is quite lovely.”

"Why, thank you!"
Beat.
The blonde man jerked away with a surprised, not so hush-hush yelp less than a second later.
His hand slapped over his mouth immediately after- perhaps a tad too solidly, if the way the tower of books he held onto quaked was anything to go by. Once carefully balanced upon the crook of his elbow, it now trembled precariously in a rather unpromising manner, prompting his gaze to snap to the top of it fearfully.
"Oh dear." He uttered desolately, scarcely having time step away from the woman before he found himself on a losing battle with gravity and physics, the texts near the top of the pile shifting one way-
THUD.
Gauvain could only flinch as the dull sound of thick texts smacking the floors echoed not so gently within the otherwise silent library. He couldn't help but stare blankly at the mess he had made for a couple of seconds.
Beat.
The man very awkwardly turned back to the reading enthusiasts, trying to muster the will to smile. He flushed instead.
"I, uh..." He started, "Um..." Rather eloquently. "Ahem!" Ready yet? "Ah. Imust beg your pardon, Madame Bergstrom, Young Master Lucas. Forcing you to witness my clumsiness..." He finally spoke a moment later, cheeks still reddened in embarrassment as he spoke, settling the now much smaller tower of texts upon the nearest table.
Beat.
'Mr. Étaín, your humming is quite lovely.' Flashed blared in his mind suddenly.
He flushed harder.
"... And for inconveniencing you with my flagrant violation of the library's code of conduct." He amended lamely.
He willed himself to not to let his gaze go back to the mess of books littering the floor- there was etiquette that needed to be addressed first. He gathered what few wits he had and tried to will away his flush, slapping on a smile instead.
His right arm folded over his chest as his left mirrored it behind his back, eyes closing as he bowed to the two.
"I hope the morning is treating you both well." he said while holding the bow, a good 3 seconds passing before he allowed himself to return to an upright position.
Beat.
"I'll be out of your way. Please, excuse me." He said as he turned away and knelt down, hands reaching for the books he had carelessly dropped.

The Madame and little Lucas winced from the blunt crash of the books upon the floor, eyes shut, noses scrunched, and pointed ears flickering from the stunning sensation running through their audial canals.
After a brief moment, the feeling went away, allowing the Madame to reassess the obvious mess on the floor.
“No, no, Mr. Étaín,” said the professor as she knelt down. “You were fit as a fiddle before we arrived, why, if I were performing janitorial duties in a place with such excellent acoustic, I would have gone so far to whistle while I worked.” Lucas climbed over her shoulder and repositioned himself, while she proceeded to scoop up a few of books in her arms indiscriminately.
“Ma, ma.”
She turned her head to see Lucas pointing at a particular book sitting on the top of the stack. “De E-picks of Sir Bigham,” he read aloud.
“The Epics of Sir Brigham?” she repeated, “You want to read this one?” “Ye!” “Alright, I’ll set that one aside for you.”
With a small stack in her arms, she rose from her spot and sauntered to a desk, placing the boy in a chair before placing the singular book on the table. “There, give me a moment while I help Mr. Étaín with putting the books in order.” A brief second after, she returned to the janitor’s side. “None of the books were damaged, were they?” Her own words prompted her to look over the books in her arms.Gauvain Étaín

Gauvain found enough humor in the Madame's admission to chuckle, some of the tension within him seeping out almost visibly, if the way his back and shoulders uncoiled from their uncomfortably tautness was anything to go by.
"Do not allow me stop you, Madame. I won't tell a soul if you won't." He replied teasingly, a light smile on his lips.
His mirth seemed to stumble upon itself when the Madame suddenly took a knee to help him. His brows furrowed slightly as his eyes widened.
"O- Oh, You need not trouble yourself..." He said, minor alarm ringing in his tone. "You are hardly required to clean up after the Janitor's messes." He finished, some humor slipping back into his words as he fixed her a sheepish grin, though it was clear he was uncomfortable forcing her to help him.
Lucas swiftly came to the rescue, however- the blonde man was distracted from his weak protests when the boy spoke up, pointing out a particular book and, to Gauvain's apparent amazement, reading the cover of it with surprising accuracy. The man gaped- but in that ever so slightly awe'd way one would when a young child was the subject of their attention.
"Impressive, Young master Lucas." He praised cheerfully as he hefted yet another book atop his new stack. "Reading already? What a bright lad! Why, I was twice your age when I finally learned my letters!" He laughed out, seemingly finding his own incompetence endlessly amusing.
The Goddess had truly blessed him with a kind teacher; the nun had been so patient with him, despite how frustrating it must have been. He had never been too gifted at academic endeavors (so easily distracted by his surroundings back then) and he imagined his desire to learn regardless had only made it harder for her- if only because she felt like she couldn't ever give up on him.
Sadly, the essential life skill that was reading hadn't been put to as much as use as it could have in Gauvain's hands. He mostly read to reaffirm his faith these days- or to carry out his duties.
There was too much work to do for there to be time for leisure reading.
He couldn't help but follow the woman as she sauntered away, stack of books still in her grasp. It quickly reminded him that the woman was assisting him even though she really needn't have bothered. This was his job and his fault- but more importantly, she was a professor of the academy. She probably worked even more than he did, and hardly needed to waste what little free time she did have sorting out his messes.
But he found he couldn't really protest her when she returned. He swallowed when she knelt once again- but simply answered instead.
"Ah, no- it seems my luck hasn't quite run out just yet." He answered with an awkward chuckle. "Thankfully." He breathed out with some relief a little later, shaking his head. "I muse apologize for taking from your time, Madame. A professor hardly needs to have what little time they've to themselves wasted."

Ha, this fellow... what an amusing bundle of nerves he is.
“What I do with my time is my business, Mr. Étaín,” said she with a single shake of her head, “Just as you would in your moments of respite.” Whenever those are, she would have added if she were more glib of tongue.
She slid her hand across the spine binding the books and studied their text deliberately, brows became cross and lips made a frown, “Hm... although, I am not one completely versed in every topic within the library.”
A quick glance was thrown to Lucas, who was already very enraptured in the book that lay open before him. Surely he wouldn’t mind her doing her own self-studying...
The Madame jovially tapped the janitor’s bicep with the back of her fingers, “Say! You’ve been here a long while, Mr. Étaín, far longer than I! Do you think you can point me in the right direction far as our monastery’s history is concerned?” She pointed her thumb back toward her son, “Can’t let my little rascal get too far ahead of me that he starts lecturing his mother.” She leaned in closer toward his ear with the back of her palm concealing the side of her face, “Where I’m from, it’s a terrible shame for a parent to know less than their child.”

Well, he couldn't exactly argue with that, could he?
"Ah..." He uttered. "I see. My sincere gratitude for your assistance, madame, and my apologies for being a bother." Nothing left to do but accept graciously. Naturally, he refrained from commenting on his own free time. Or rather, the lack thereof.
And with that, he resumed his duty in silence without a further fuss. It had been a considerable stack of books, but between the two of them it took little time to finish. Very soon, he was back to his original task of emptying the bookcases.
Her words prompted a hum from him as he piled yet another (considerably more conservatively sized) stack of books on the crook of his arm, the man turning his gaze to her.
"I don't think even the Archbishop is versed in every single topic within this library." He chuckled out, ignorant to the longevity of the Archbishop's life. "Garreg Mach Monastery's selection is the finest and most complete in Fódlan." He parroted proudly and dutifully. So he had been told. He couldn't exactly confirm it, what with his complete ignorance of the world outside the Monastery's immediate vicinity, but it sounded about right.
He did know the Archbishop's Advisor occasionally, ah... pruned the available texts within the library, but if the man deemed a book inappropriate for the inhabitants of the monastery, well; he was just the janitor, who was he to question the will of the Goddess? He brushed aside the line of thought with practiced ease, going back to his work. Letting his mind wander would get him nowhere.
It didn't take long before his attention was called for once again, however.
His gaze shifted back to the woman as she tapped his arm, tilting his head slightly as he responded.
"Yes?" He asked softly, playing along and smiling in a playfully devious manner as the woman leaned in and whispered in his ear moments later, cheeks colored just slightly. "I see... I'm afraid to say that with such a brilliant son, you've got your work cutout for you, Madame." He replied in jest, placing his current stack into yet another table before replying. "Fortunately, you've came to the right place!" Arguably; since the librarian wasn't around, Gauvain was the next best thing.
"I am not... an extremely well read man, I must admit. But I am proud to say I am a servant of the goddess and the church! I've read every text on the church of seiros within these walls." Naturally, as the center of faith in all of Fodlan, he had read about the monastery in detail, too.
Walking up to one of the tables, seemingly the first to have been used, the man pressed his finger to the one of the stacks and began dragging it down, reading off the spines with a hum. "What you are looking for should be riiiiiight he-..." he paused.
"A second." He said, brows knitting together as he began actually sorting through the books, picking and looking at the actual covers carefully.
Where had the book disappeared to?
He had emptied the section were the history of the church of Seiros and all related topics could be found first. It should have been here. Hn...
"Perhaps a student or faculty member borrowed it...?" He mumbled to himself. And as far as he could remember, they only had one particular book dedicated to the history of the monastery specifically... "Phooey." He mumbled, harrumphing. "No problem!" He said, beginning to heft a large number of thick, extremely well-preserved looking tomes onto the crook of his elbow.
"Nothing to do but piece it together from the other texts!" There was only one text dedicated to the history of the monastery- but nearly every other text on the church and its history had bits and pieces as well. He knew- he had studied them religiously (hue) after all. Almost unceremoniously, the man dropped the large stack onto the table nearest to the woman, humming happily.
"Do not hesitate to ask for any further assistance, Madame! I've read these books from covers to back, if there's anything specific you need then I'm sure I can point you in the right direction!"

Aha, so her fairly obvious judgement of him was correct. If he was to live here for most his life, he would likely exhaust the information that was present within these bookcases! Why, he even knew the placement of each of the books! What a devout little janitor!
The tips of the Madame’s lips curled, her tone switching to one of resignation, “Hmmm! Well, that’s all well and fine, Mr. Etain, but suffice to say that piecing history together is a time-consuming and incredibly arduous task; we only have twelve hours left in the day. We’ll simply have to wait until the book is returned.” Whenever that may be, she would have added.
She continued, “This affair notwithstanding, I do know now that I have a wonderful guide to the monastery and its grounds.” Her hand motioned to the janitor playfully, “I have been here only two years, after all. Surely there is plenty that I’ve yet to know.”

Oh. Well, yes, he supposed it was a bit too much to expect The Madame to comb through each and every text in order to find what she was looking for. Free time was a commodity, and here he was, demanding of her all of it in such a dull sounding endeavor.
"Ah... My apologies. I didn't consider how arduous a task it might be." He admitted sheepishly as he swiftly swept the books back towards the crook of his arm, hefting them up. How rude of him, to waste the woman's time...
She did not seem bothered by it, but the Janitor was looking morose as he took the books back to their place and resumed his work cleaning out the bookcases.
That didn't last long however; he blinked at her in silence for a full second after she spoke next. Then pointed at himself as if in question- and then realized that yes, she meant him a half second later.
"O- oh! Of course, Madam! I would be delighted to guide you through Garreg Mach!" He assured cheerily, seemingly pulled out of his short lived gloom by the prospect of being useful.
"There is much that most never see of the monastery, yes! Most of it is not even prohibited either- just out of the way... or hidden." He said the last part while leaning towards her and dropping his voice a few octaves- into an attempt ata whisper, of course. He was halfway across the library still piling books and nearly shouting his elation, so if anyone happened to be walking through the hall, they probably heard him.
"Golly, there's even one right here in this very library!" He informed her cheerily, though he did nothing to point her towards this so called secret. He simply hummed instead, picking up the pace at which he collected the books as if energized by his sudden good mood.

Oho, what a delightful young man, a far more expressive one than she had first thought of him. One truly does experience the personality when the other allows for some vulnerability.
Nevertheless, it turns out that he is a grand well of information. Hidden things? She was an absolute fool for knowing them! The thought of becoming bosom buddies immediately crossed her mind, and it would not leave her until they had become so.
Her face subconsciously shown interest at the aforementioned, brows raised and eyes widening slightly. Why, the fact that he would mention a secret present in this very place caused a hand to press against her lips, and her voice to drop to whispery excitement. “Oh, Mr. Etain! Your enthusiasm is quite infectious, and I dare say that you have hooked my ear with such tantalizing words. You needn’t show me the hidden things, but my curiosity will surely keep me awake at night.”
Meanwhile, Lucas remained engrossed in his reading material, eyes dancing from sentence to sentence as he imagined the valiant battles of the book’s hero.

The young janitor was the kind of man that was easily swept into the excitement- but he was not one to mention anything for no reason.
"Ah! I could not possibly sleep well myself knowing I ruined your own, Madame!" He sounded a tad too excited to be apologetic- Like someone glad to have finally found someone to tell of some secret or gossip. "I suppose there is no choice! I must show you! Just this once." He said, winking playfully.
Yeah, that last part was definitely a lie.
He made a show of looking around carefully- a dramatic gesture, but little more, as they were completely alone save her child- before settling down his stack of books once again.
He then made his way towards the center of the library. A large structure, visible to anyone that entered, had stood there the entire time they had spoken, looming over them, seemingly serving no purpose other than decoration. Atop it, there was a large globe, representing the planet upon which the continent of Fodlan existed.
It being a mere decoration however, became doubtful as the Janitor settled both hands upon one of the many beveled discs that formed the base of the structure- and began to rotate them. His arms strained, his biceps bulging and digits reddening as he forced the apparatus to spin like a gyroscope.
There was the tell-tale sound of some sort of mechanism at work echoing not only from the large construct, but from seemingly the entirety of the library.
The youth panted in exertion as he worked, though the grin on his lips refused to leave.
"Just... a few moments. This would ideally be done with a companion or two." He clarified, dragging his forearm over his forehead before bringing it back down once again.
