It isn’t often that mercenaries get the kinds of jobs that they want. No hired sword is so lucky to get two jobs in a row that don’t involve fighting someone else’s war.
Alas, these were those days.
It was the Nohrian side of the canyon fort, laid siege by advancing Hoshidan forces. Pegasus and wyverns with their riders flew through the air in a violent dogfight as soldiers engaged on the bridges below. Knights stood their ground nearer to the fort, keeping the invaders at bay.
The skirmish had lasted for several days already, with clear signs that Nohr was beginning to weaken from the onslaught. Nohrian soldiers fought while still covered head to toe in bandages. Rubble and shields were used in desperate attempts to patch holes that were punched through by waves of oni warriors, and ramshackle barricades were made out of pikes and lances to keep the Hoshidans from advancing into the fort. The strength of troubadour healing staves were weakened, vulnerary supplies were rationed to the most extreme wound, and food was becoming scarcer by the minute, and with it, morale.
However, the Hoshidans pulled back after another successful defense, and the Nohrians had a moment of respite. Soldiers were instructed to rest, and some wandered into the mess hall for a small cup of watery soup mixed with lentils.
“We won’t last,” a disheartened soldier sighed, “The next wave will finish us for sure.”
“Hey, don’t say that! We’ve lasted this long. They couldn’t have that big of a reserve at this point.“
“You probably didn’t see them marching in their fresh supply of pegasus knights then, huh...”
“... You’ve got to be kidding.”
“Those Hoshidans aren’t dumb. They’re hacking at us little by little until they send in a big enough force to get us with. They can flank us by dropping off forces on our border, and we’re spread thin as is!”
“Siiiiiiigh...”
“Hey, hey, but that’s something I thought. It’s not like they’d actually do it, right?”
“Either way, we’re done for...”
As the soldier spoke, the ceiling a few feet away from them collapsed, causing those present in the room to jolt in their seats and look on.
A tall figure had fallen through the roof, wearing a unique type of flight coat with a hat that had managed to fall over the person’s face. An arrow was stuck out of the stranger’s shoulder, and blood streamed down the arm.
“We’re under attack!” one of the soldiers shrieked, he began flailing his arms in the air in panic. However, the door on the other side of the room swung wide open, revealing a flustered archer.
“That was a mistake! I thought it was another pegasus rider from Hoshido!” he exclaimed frantically, “It was actually a dark flier from our side! I’m sorry!”
“A dark flier?!” another shrieked nearby him, he seized the man by his neck and began to throttle him, “You shot down one of our own?! You damned fool!”
