However, Fila’s latter answer was shorter than the Madame would have liked, but mercs will be mercs, won’t they?
The woman smiled, although her discontentment shown with the raise of her inner eyebrows.
“Straight to the point, are we? Well,” her hands slapped together as her volume and speed of words heightened to excited levels, “I’m short on staff at the inn! You coming to me for simpler, less excruciating work is nothing short of a godsend!” She patted the tip of her fingers, “I attempted to hire some mercs to fill in some roles, but they turned me down because they wouldn’t stoop down to clean tables, change beds, and mop floors!” However, she waved her hands to the side, “Oh, but I wouldn’t have you do back-breaking janitorial work, my dear. No-no-no! You have looks and charm, so I was thinking you’d be a perfect...” she paused for effect, “... Waitress? What do you say, Fila ?”

Fila startles as the Madame shifts gears, listening attentively to try and get her bearings on the direction of the conversation. It had been a very confusing day for Fila, especially in light of the constant low-level pain that rather insistently drew her attention.
Any guilt over the unsatisfactory response was washed away at the mention of working.. at an inn.
There were elements of her past it evoked, elements she had tried very hard to put past her. It wasn't the Madame's fault, she couldn't known. Still... That was then, this was now. and the Madame's inn was unlikely to ask her to earn additional coin through less scrupulous means, as had her first few places of employment.
"I do have experience as a Waitress, yes. I can help out for a limited time while I heal."

“Hoho! Good!” the Madame clapped her hands together jubilantly, “In that case, you’ll be working closely with Riley and Margaret. I’m quite certain you’re acquainted with Riley, but Margie is much less sociable since she keeps to the kitchen.” She pulled the history book from off the desk and proceeded to return it back into the bookshelf.
For a brief moment, she stood frozen in place in contemplation. Then, she suddenly snapped her fingers, “Right! You’re still injured, aren’t you? Would you like a vulnerary to stave off the pain? I wouldn’t want you to torture yourself if you’re walking around with heaps of food on your shoulders...” Fila

Fila watches her go, trying to recall the various harsh lessons on being a waitress in Marcarth. She had had to learn them all through trial, error, and misery when she first arrived; she had no intention of going through all the trouble again.
The Mercenary-turned-waitress looks over in concern as Madame freezes. "Erm, Madame? Is everything alright-?" she jolts slightly at the snap, scolding herself internally while the Madame was turned away. The situation was hardly tense, she didn't need to go back to the frightened animal she had been before just because she was returning to one of her old occupations.
Aloud, she says "Yes, That would be appreciated. I'll manage well enough, but something to soothe the worst of it would be good."

The Madame nodded emphatically, “Just so, my dear!”
At that moment, there was a knock at the door.
“Madame? You called?”
“Oh,” the woman craned her head toward the door, “Indeed, indeed, indeed I did.” She advanced to the door and opened it, revealing Janette, the inn receptionist. “Jan, would you be so kind as to retrieve a vulnerary for Fila, here? She’s to begin working for the tavern, effective immediately. Oh! Before I forget, a uniform for her?”
“Ah, oh, yes,” the fox-eyed girl nodded her head, “At once, Madame. Shall I inform Ms. Brunhilde and Ms. Halfox?”
“Please do, please do.”
With the affirmation, Janette glanced to Fila briefly and curtseyed, then continued off to perform the requested duties.
The Madame placed her hands on her hips and twisted her shoulders toward Fila, “I suppose I’d need to formerly introduce you to the staff, dear. I think it would help you with some good first impressions.”

"Ah. Yes. I would like to meet by coworkers, even if its on a temporary basis." She looks over at Jan, expression somewhat embarrassed. "Ah. A uniform. Of course." Her old jobs had either not required a uniform, or required one that she happily burned once it was no longer in use.
The mercenary looks considerably less confident now that it is clear that the situation is actually happening, but resolves to press on.

“That right! A uniform,” the Madame nodded as she beckoned Fila to follow after her, “I’ve had a local tailor make several sizes to accommodate heights, and I’d say you’re...” She glanced back at the elf as she began rubbing her hands together, “... Oh, just a touch taller, so perhaps a little under two meters. Yes, yes...”
... Hm? That wasn’t the same face Fila had worn earlier. So very... lackluster.
The Madame turned to face the elf. “Is there something the matter, Fila? Am I...” she put a hand to her mouth, a worrisome countenance appearing, “... pressuring you a little too much with everything? I know myself as a rather gung-ho individual with work, but I know that I tend to get too excited and forget people’s feelings...”

Fila follows after the Madame, smoothing out her emotions and sorting through the troublesome memories. Master the self, rather than suppress it. That was that way. It had let her control dark magic, it would let her sift through her experience without being bogged down by a few (hundred, thousand) bad days. The scared elf back then was not Her, but that presence was still needed and acknowledged. It could be called upon if needed, Fila would be sure of it. She had to repay the Madame for her kindness and trust using any means at her disposal.
The looks up from her thoughts at the Madame turns back to her. Ah, concern. Appreciated, but unnecessary at this juncture. Preparing for the task at hand took priority; Fila would decide if the Madame was the sort of person to help her sort through her murky morass of a past later. Such a thing was a horrible burden to impose on a person, and Fila would not do so to a friend and ally lightly.
"No. Its, ah.. Its fine. Bad memories from fresh of the boat. I'll be alright, just making sure I remember how to walk the walk and take people's orders and such." The elf gives a wry, it tired, grin as reassurance.

The Madame sighed gently through her nose. “Well, as your contractor, I desire that my contractees are well-taken cared of! Otherwise, I shouldn’t be in charge of running this place! Beh!” A little flick of her wrist accompanied the little noise she made. That said, she took Fila to a hallway of the guest rooms, at which point she began to pace down, glancing at each room number as she went.
“Do you have a place you’re staying at currently, Fila?” the Madame inquired, “I’ve made it policy that my staff are to stay at the inn unless they are locals to the city.”

Fila shakes her head. "I did, but then it was searched and seized by royal authorities. The landlord got a bit too greedy or a bit too careless, I imagine." She coughs nervously, continuing "What little I own is actually in transit; someone I trust reasonably well it holding it in a warehouse until I have a place to live. Way of repaying a small favor I did for them, but I don't expect the arrangement to hold up on a permanent basis."
The mercenary examines the rooms as the go by, thinking of both comfort (they were all perfectly fine in that regard, as expected) and security (it varied, but in ways immutable by virtue of the architecture). She stops when they get to one of the rooms, her voice the hesitant tones of one trying to hide how much they desire a trifling thing. "I would like this one, if possible. Assuming it isn't taken by a patron or another person in your employment."

“Ooh,” the Madame sucked in her breath, “Not a wonderful situation, I may comment.” Richer folks in Nohr tend to sound a little less reputable, by the way Fila was describing.
In any case, a room was selected, bearing the number “8” upon its door. As luck would have it, the room was indeed vacant, from the signs of a set bed and tidy complementaries on the drawer and desk.
“Well, looks to me that 8 isn’t being used,” the Madame responded, she glanced back to the mercenary, “If you are looking to be a resident, I would be happy to discuss rates and whatnot with you, ah, but as always, if you’re working at the inn or for me as one of my personal mercs, it would be convenient for you to not have to pay for lodging.” She shrugged her shoulders as she turned away, “Just a thought for you.”
As she spoke, Janette appeared at the doorway, carrying a uniform on a wire hanger and a vulnerary bottle. She curtseyed to the Madame, and then turned her attention toward Fila. “Pardon my intrusion, but I have your uniform and a vulnerary,” she said with another bouncing kneel. The vulnerary was put on the desk, while the dress was hung up on a knob sticking out of the wall. “I’ll put them here for your convenience... oh, yes, and I suppose I must also give you the room key.” A keychain was pulled from her apron, and a metal key with the number 8 etched into it was removed and placed on the table. “Everyone is waiting downstairs to meet you proper, Ms. Filigree. We look forward to working with you.” With that, another bow, and she exited the room.

Fila does her suppress the grin of joy. The room was hers. Excellent. And the Madame's offer did sound attractive; lodgings in Marcarth were far too expensive, and the ratio of her possessions to the ostentatious room she was currently holding was pathetic. She could do with something actually within her budget.
"I'll... consider it." she murmurs, glancing over her shoulder as Janette enters. Fila steps agilely to side to let her, giving a polite nod as she watches her set the various items on the desk, and hang up the uniform. "Ah. You as well."
Fila clears her throat, a little embarrassed to ask the question, but needing it answered nonetheless. "Did the Madame want me to put on the uniform and start working now, or...? I don't mind if that's the case..."

"That would be rather charitable of you to start today," she responded with a fold of her arms, "That said, given that you shared that you've a physical condition, I simply desire that you wouldn't start working until you've recovered properly. However, now that I bring that back up, I, as your employer, would desire to know what sort of injury you had sustained." She leaned on one leg and placed a hand on her cheek, "Hmmm... it would be a hindrance than a help if you started working with a glaring thorn in your side. That, and I would like to see if the uniform Janette prepared for you actually fits."

"Ah..." Fila looks far more shy about the injury than any discussion previous. "I was... careless in a fight, and got a bit too close to the front lines. And Hoshidian swordsman, they always move a bit quicker than you expect, and well..." she trails off, utterly mortified to have been injured in such a rookie-way. The sword had gotten her good, and they hadn't had a heal staff on hand. Nohr seemed to be considerably more sparing with its troubadours than Hoshido was with its clergy, something she had always had a faint pang on envy over; good healers were life and death incarnate.
"I would prefer one day more to heal if possible, in all honesty. That should let me at least move without showing obvious signs of the injury." The sword to the side had been an awkward, glancing blow, but it was still a great stick of metal battering her near her internal organs. She was very lucky, considering the monumental act of foolhardiness she had performed.
"I'm well enough to put on the uniform." Fila looks over at the Madame, a quizzical expression on her face. "Not that I mind, but did you intend to stay in here while I changed?" If there was anything double-meaning to be taken from her choice of word, the mercenary did not appear to have noticed it.

Hmm... so Fila’s wound was indeed a result of the fruitless war, and knowing that she had contended with the Hoshidan army was crucial information.
"I see, that's good to know..." she spoke as if speaking her inward thoughts, "What a trooper you are! Coming all this way to ask me for a favor? That takes a lot of spirit to do what you're doing. Why, I haven't seen such determination in other humans as I have today! Ahahaha! Aaaaah...” Her pronounced sigh had her bend forward.
Then with a slow, subtle raise of her head, she turned herself around. “I’ll give you space, m’dear. Don’t keep me waiting, will you?” She promptly left the room and closed the door behind herself.
