The quiet port town laid just a tad close to the border between Hoshidan territory and Nohrian territory. But the village itself was still quite well for itself. The area was relatively close to the sea, allowing them to trade their goods to those willing, as there was bound to be foreigners just itching to bask in the wealth and splendor of Nohrian culture. The townsfolk were able to withstand the cold weather, as it was not as harsh as it was in the deeper Nohrian territories. But the lack of good crops still hurt them all the same, even moreso when they were a port town with few land to actually cultivate crops with.
On this particular evening in the port town, Captain Kyverian Alto was in the middle of inspecting wagons as they made their way into the port town. No cart was left unchecked, as each one that came in or out the gate he was guarding was thoroughly inspected for contraband and illegal items. A few were confiscated, a couple were even sent to the small fortress for an arrest. But overall, everything was quiet, the day had only just got started, after all. But, there was an ominous chill within the air, a strange sense of some malign event just awaiting to unfold.
The particularly foreboding winds was still giving Kyverian a bad vibe, one he could not shake, no matter what came his way. For now, his attention was semi-occupied by the thought, his overall attention still on maintaining appearances and performing his duties as expected.
Fila hummed a jaunty tune, trying to drown out the creeping sensation of dread. Her mecenary's instinct told her that something bad as going to happen. Really bad. But until it did happen, she wanted to remain positive. She could use a little happiness in her life after Eth-... after the encounter with someone she had not expected to meet.
She was hoping to have as much of the day to herself as possible. She'd sprung for a new tome recently, and still had enough coin left over to comfortably pay the rent. All in all, an excellent day. Even if the breeze was foreboding, it was also rather pleasant. Strong sea air.
Even if it was likely going to be ruined soon, Fila would treasure this moment. And keep her tomes close at hand. She was no fool, after all.

It was all too quiet. None of it made sense. Kyverian felt the sudden drop in his stomach as an unusually loud sound startles the serene atmosphere the port town offered.
"BOOM!"
The sound of an explosion came against the gate, sending the wall crumbling down, debris flying everywhere. Soon enough, the skies were darkened the arrows, dozens of them raining down from above. The captain had seen this tactic only once before, but these were not the skilled tactics of Nohrian deserters, nor the average brigand. This was the tactic of Hoshido's Kinshi Knights. "Take cover!" That was all Kyverian could shout as he runs behind one of the large boulders that fell from the destroyed wall. Arrows come splashing down like rain drops, the volley turning several shaken soldiers into Nohrian pin-cushions. The alarms are set to ring, as more explosions erupt on the outer layer of the walls. Mages scramble to provide defenses, as more soldiers are picked off by the alarming skill of the flying knights.
"Archers! Return fire!"
Someone had rallied the defenders into action, to hold off the assault that was soon led on foot by a dozen armed Hoshidan warriors. They carried Naginatas, katanas, and some even wielded bows. But overall, they bore a distinct, unifying color scheme of red and white. The defenders stay along the wall, as officers rally the defenders into action, the civilians sent into a panic. No one had anticipated a Hoshidan raid, but someone had gotten tired of the lack of action. Now, there was chaos, the embroiling conflict having snuck by one of the border fortresses and striking the port town. Fila could see, whether she looked to the East or the West gates, that there was a siege going on. The people were in a flurry of emotions, as many soldiers do their best to keep order.
"To the boats! We need to flee by boat!" "We're trapped! We're going to die!" "What are the soldiers doing?! They need to push them back!" "I don't want to die!"
Sooner or later, one of the defenses was going to fall. But for now, Kyverian moves from behind the rubble, to take a peek at the marching Hoshidans as he himself makes his way to the safety of the ruined wall.
All at once, destruction. Arrows, fire, and a consuming tide of red and white. Absolute chaos. For a moment, Fila almost jumped into help. These people were innocents, and she didn't want to see done to them what she had done to Hoshido.
But... She wasn't a soldier. She was a mercenary, almost a civilian until someone paid her. That was what she had set out to be, someone who could never be dragged into a conflict without getting something in return. Not beholden only to themselves (for that way madness laid), but someone who always got a reward out of every act. And yet...
And yet...
She wanted to help. It was a strange feeling, one she'd thought long-buried. But she wanted to help. Whether an errant whim, a result of that fearsome encounter months ago, or the lingering good mood from earlier in the day, Fila decided she wanted to help. And so she would.
Focus. Take in the surroundings. Civilians all around her, where would they go? The boats. But they were panicking, they needed to act. Drawing herself up to her full height and assuming the persona of a soldier, Fila quickly barked out orders. "Everyone! Get to the boats, NOW! Goods can be replaced, lives cannot! Move, move move!" If you acted like you knew what you were doing, no one would question you in times of panic. The civilians ignored her ragged appearance, grateful for someone to let them pretend there was a plan.
Fila quickly ushered them towards the boats. They were close to the outer wall, but still on the other side of it. The withdrawing town guard would hopefully give them a buffer, but the Kinshi knights...
One of those knights was more than a match for Fila, but even the most exalted of aerial troopers feared the sting of wind magic. And as a member of the Ice Tribe, Fila's was fearsome indeed. Drawing a swirling gale from her newly purchased tome, she flings a whirlwind at one of the approaching sorties. Channeling on the icy winds of her home, she managed to magnify its size at the cost of its potency. If she was actually trying to hit them then it likely would've splashed harmlessly across their mounts. It was even weaker than the standard winds of the tome. But it looked several ranks above its class, and that was enough to divert the approaching wing long enough for the civilians and her to get to cover.

The Kinshi knights kept their distance, refusing to go too far, in fear of being dismounted from their rides. But some Kinshi managed to get through, at the cost of some of their bulk becoming downed or killed by not only the flurry of magic and arrows aimed at the sky, but by the distracting winds conjured up by Fila Unfortunately, only a handful of knights fall from the skies, the main bulk retreating as soon as the advancing guard was brought down by the defensive anti-air retaliation. But that did little to turn away the tide of arrows that they'd rain down on the defensive line.
The Samurai make their push, with several important soldiers leading the front, emboldening their fellow warriors by their sheer presence alone. Even as arrows and magic rained down, rending the very earth they stood upon, they still charged forth. These brave warriors and their dwindling numbers balanced out their morale in their favor. Even moreso when one of the samurai leap forward, jumping off the rubble to land a killing blow on one of the dark mages upon the wall.
"For Hoshido!"
Their battlecry roared aloud, as they shake the resolve of the Nohrians. Bit by bit, they make their push. Few of these Samurai go down, even fewer dare to flee when one goes down. Kyverian refused to let such a display shake him, as he sees the Kinshi arrow storm let up, now that the infantry had gotten close. The soldiers clash, the defensive line holds strong, as the lesser warriors come face to face with the black wall of Nohrian defenses. Meanwhile... Fila's attempts to gather the crowd had done a good enough job so that the other soldiers may also get said point across. However, only a small few were onboard with the idea. Some of them would rather risk running through the least assaulted gate to make their flight of their lives. But those who were willing to take their chances with the boats look to Fila and the other Nohrian solders and officials, ready to follow them to the safety of the boats. Unfortunately, East wall had been unable to hold back the tide of the Hoshidans, as many of them pour through the gates. Some of them are still stopped by the artillery, but it seemed as if the East wall was suffering the brunt of the Hoshidan assault.
Their war shouts ring loudly, as it seems that the soldiers within the city were now hard-pressed to make a quick, possibly ddisastrous tactical error: Defend the villagers and lead them to safety, or defend one of the walls and ensure they hold. The official stand about, murmuring amongst themselves. Though Fila's words might sway to one or the other, they seem reluctant to hear her out, despite her aid in controlling the chaos.
Fial sighs, pinching the bridge of her nose with one hand a feeding a crow that had landed on her shoulder with the other. She had really been hoping she wouldn't actually have to take charge. What was it with events lately? She was a shabby mercenary, people were supposed to give her orders. This trend of Nohrian officers asking for her to make decisions was frustrating.
Well, they weren't technically asking her, but since they were all going to die if she didn't do something it was the same thing. She walks towards the group, futilely attempting to wave off the two crows now perched on her shoulders. She claps her hands loudly, getting the officers' attentions.
"Hey. HEY! Make a decision already, we're burning time. The enemy lacks mages, so any armored units can probably hold the wall. Dark mages are going to have a hell of a time against fliers, whether its hitting them or getting through their resistance to magic. Former applies to the samurai as well. If we get any of the mages with a wind tome and some of the pikemen to guide the villages, we can probably reinforce the East wall long enough to evacuate the city. The Kinshi knights are the only ones who can get this far otherwise, so we'll either try to shred them here or make them stop pincushioning civilians. Either way is good for us."
One of the crows caws loudly. Both of them give beady eyed glares at the officers to match Fila's look of impatience and disappointment. Even if they didn't listen to her, they needed to make a decision. If they just stood around arguing, then everyone was doomed.

There was very little time to come to a cohesive decision, especially as the Hoshidans breached the Eastern gate. The Western gate still held, but the Hoshidans were fast approaching onto Fila and the stationed soldiers. With the pressing matters bearing down upon them, one of the officers steps forward and stares directly at the mercenary. "You. Yes, you, mercenary." He points to Fila directly, in the event she'd feign not being called, "Unleash a volley of magic on the approaching Hoshidans. I will aid you, as well as the other two." The fourth and final officer, who held a sword, nods to the other three as he prepares to lead the soldiers into the front to hold off the Hoshidans.
"We need to delay those Hoshidans. We cannot save all the villagers but... Perhaps, we can save the band of them that has taken to us. There are other officers that will, undoubtly, die trying to breach either the East or the West..." For a moment, the officer lowers his head, adjusting the officer's cap as he opens the tome. "There's no where to flee but into the lion's den... Or... Out to the sea. Let's not waste any more time." Soon enough, the officer brave enough to speak begins to chant, preparing to use his magic to keep the charging soldiers at bay.
Meanwhile... The Hoshidans are able to breach through the Western gate, slipping some of their warriors that hadn't fallen in the charge, straight through the gaping hole in the wall. Less and less Nohrians were holding the line, even Kyverian himself had to pull back to treat his wounds. Their morale was far too high, far too many of the Hoshidans were ready to die, just to so much as have their body be used as a stepping ladder for the next. The over-zealous warriors continue their push, the mages tiring themselves out. The archers were gradually running out of arrows to shoot. Morale continued to plummet, as the Kinshi knights re-surface to unleash yet another volley of arrows.
"Hoshidan volley incoming!"
Hopefully, Kyverian was heard amidst the clashing steel, the thundering sound of Hoshidan soldiers continuing their assault, only to peel back to avoid being showered by arrows. This time, however, the Nohrians were able to mount a far better defense. Shields were raised up high, as a return volley was launched back at the Kinshi. The flying bowmen scattered, gradually losing more of their mounted warriors. The once mighty arrow storm had dwindled, as one of the Kinshi in the air fires one last arrow. The arrow itself slams right into Kyverian's plated breast, causing him to stagger back, tumbling down the rubble and into the city.
"Greh... We have to hold.... We-" Kyverian's moment of self-murmuring is interrupted, in favor of witnessing the Eastern gate letting in more Hoshidans. They had managed to secure the Eastern side, while the West side was just now turning the tide. There were far more Hoshidans piling through from the East than there was the West. But Kyverian couldn't abandon his post just yet, not when the battle was getting started.
Fila bites back a reply as the East Gate falls. Well, so much for that plan. Too much time wasted. Things got much harder from here. She looks up as one of the officers addresses her, pointing at herself as if to confirm before listening.
"Ah. Last stand of Nohr then? Well, anyone we can save is better than nothing I suppose." She steps up to the officers, dragging a hand across her Flux tome to draw out a compressed bundle of a shadows and taking aim at the approaching Hoshidians. Thankfully, she didn't have to worry about missing for once; they were everywhere after all, she was sure to hit something. "If we live through this, one of you needs to get payment for me."
With a whispered chant, she fires into the horde alongside the officers. A samurai would normally be swift enough to dodge, but boxed in by their fellows, her blow catches one square in the chest. A suburb hit, but the dead soldier is quickly replaced by another.
The crows finally took their leave, gathering on a nearby building and watching the fight.

The volley of dark magic tore the streets apart, dismantling pieces of the building as it goes flying about. The Samurai leading the charge are forced to stall, as the volley's carnage that managed to not strike them had torn up their path. There were now obstacles for them to get through, as well as a sense of hesitation. The Hoshidans were stalled, now forced to go around as the dark mage volley comes to an end.
"Move! To the boats!"
The Nohrian soldiers move forward, to secure the path, as well as to prevent the Hoshidan forces from obstructing their destination. The fourth officer rushes ahead at the front, the citizens following behind. Thanks to the Hoshidan presence emerging from the Eastern gate, some more civilians throw in their lot with those running towards the boat. Sooner or later, it becomes apparent to the other citizens that fleeing through the Western gate is also not an option unless they believe themselves capable of sneaking by them.
As the mages prepare to move, the 'Head Honcho' of the officers soon turns towards Fila in order to speak directly with the mercenary. "Should we get through this, Nohr shall be greatly indebted to your service..." The brave officer soon turns his attention towards the boat, adjusting his military cap one final time as he travels behind the crowd. The second group of civilians trail behind them as the near the boat.
"Just a bit-"
Before the officer could finish his words, he was interrupted by the sudden throwing stars that slammed into his chest plate. He soon falls backwards, as the Nohrian solders take point to defend him. The sneak attack had came from the right side, yet there was nothing there. Soon enough, the brave officer takes notice and quickly corrals the other two officers into action.
"We have ninjas! Shields up and defend the citizens! Mages! Target any place that gives them a shadow!"
The less places they had to hide, the better. The mages soon turn torwards the flanks on the right and left while the citizens make a sprint for the boat. The soldiers stick with them, shields raised to defend not only themselves, but the citizens as they fled.
Fila looks around, eyes darting from shadow to shadow, as she takes cover next to some of the knights. Alisa would've given her more comfort, but perhaps it was for the best that the cheerful knight wasn't in this mess. It'd be one more person Fila felt responsible for.
She flings a blast of shadow into an alley way. Upon hearing a grunt of pain, she and another mage obliterate the area. She glances to the group tending to the officer before calling over "Is he alive?"
Fila and the other mages try to screen the civilians' flight, clearing away areas that would give the ninjas angles on the civilians.

Only two soldiers had caught their commanding officer, hauling him up to his feet. His face, however, had gone pale. The soldiers kept their moving, ensuring that the officer was going to make it to the boat. The oblieration of one area, however, had triggered a reaction from the shadows. A flurry of shurikens came sailing out from the darkness, a few of the citizens nicked in the cross fire, one of them being hit in the neck before they seize up. The soldiers, however, took the brunt of the assault. Many were harmed by the shurikens, some falling limp, despite the shuriken seemingly not hitting anything vital. They all, however, bore the same pale, blood-drained expression on their face.
"Don't let those shurikens hit you! Mages! Concentrate fire on all the shadows!"
The brave officer's voice booms out, rousing the mages from their stupor, pouring dark magic into all the areas shrouded in dark. Many of the ninjas were revealed, as some of them are able to covertly move out of the shadows. Most of them, however, were unable to avoid the tide of true darkness, enveloped in unimaginable horror before they inevitably meet their demise. There was one last return volley from the enemy ninja, with shields raised to intercept them.
"Push through them! We're almost there!"
There wasn't going to be any more hiding space, once they reached through the last alleyway. All that stood between them now was the pier. With most of the ninjas eliminated in the revenge volley, the few that were still alive took their chance to flee, sticking to what shadows they could as they withdraw from the conflict. "You! Mercenary!"Fila is called, as the brave officer turns to face her, "I have one last task for you, once we have the people on board! I require you to send word to the Western wall to withdraw!"
Someone needed to go and warn what troops remained at the wall to finally pull back. The Hoshidan soldiers on the Eastern side were going to overrun them,if no one gave word of it. "We need to save what of our own we can! We need to flee, before the Hoshidans begin to target our only means of escape!"
Fila looks up. Another task? They had best pay her extremely well for this, she hadn't planned on going any farther than the boat. In all honesty, it might be a better idea for her to refuse. Money was no good if she was dead after all.
And yet...
After all the horrible things she had done in the name of coin, perhaps this was for the best? It was only appropriate she place as much value on her own life as she had on the lives of all those people just trying to get by in the world, same as she. "What do you need me to do?" She answered, the internal struggle having taken less than a second in total.
Ah, they were trying to save their troops. Strategically sound. Nohr had good officers, ones who cared considerably more about their own troops then popular perception gave them credit for. Fila nods, quickly moving towards the Western wall at a dead run. The longer she was out on her own, the more likely she'd get ambush by ninjas. If she linked up with the Western forces, she might be able to fight her way out with them.

Despite all the carnage that unfurled all around Fila , the least of her worries, currently, was more Hoshidans attacking her. For the most part, chaos still reigned supreme as those that did not follow with her and the other citizens were still thrown in a panic. The longer she went on to the Western wall, the more hopeless it seemed that there might ever be any reinforcements. Soon enough, Nohr soldiers can be seen fleeing from the Western wall. Archers continued to pour arrows into the skies, forcing what Kinshi knights remained to inevitably fall back and allow the samurai to finish moping up the rest.
As if right on time, Kyverian comes rounding the corner, spotting Fila on his way towards the piers with the rest of what remained of the Nohrian forces from the crumbling wall. "Fila!" He called out, waving to the mage as the soldiers ran on by, "What are you still doing here? We need to-" Before another word could be uttered, a dreadful sound came bellowing to from the East, that same war cry that made the low morale of the Nohr soldiers tremble further.
"For Hoshidooooooo!"
The morale was only plummeting further, the ragged soldiers just barely scraping by. The reunion between the two was, unfortunately, cut short. With one hand reaching out for Fila's shoulder, Kyverian moves to get her marching along with the rest of the soldiers, as well as what civilians remained in the crumbling city still. "We need to move! MOVE!" Despite the various injuries Kyverian suffered while manning the western wall, he still had enough strength left in him to keep battling, to fight until he could hold no more breath within his debilitated body.
The second wave of Hoshido forces were gradually gaining from the East, the revitalized Samurai were catching up to them from the West. There weren't any reinforcements coming along to save them. Now, it was do or die. There'd be no surrendering to the enemy, not while they were this determined to wipe them out.
"Steady! We're going to push through them!"
Kyverian mustered up his strength to shout out a command, his words echoing amongst what chain of command still remained with the fleeing garrison.
Fila didn't need to be told twice, running alongside Kyverian. To him, she says "I'll try to get the mages in order, you get our front guard in a formation or we'll get shredded!"
She quickly runs ahead towards several clusters of fleeing mages, moving with surprising speed for a page-flipper.
"Form up! Get your tomes ready and fall in behind the frontline!"
They were going to get out of this one way or another, and she intended to live through this mess. She knew as well as Kyverian that cohesion and morale were the only things that would give the mangled remains of the garrison any chance at getting out alive. And the best way to keep morale high was making sure people thought there was someone in charge that knew what they were doing. A few volleys from the mages would even the playing field between the fresh samurai and the battered infantry, but only if everyone did their jobs.
"Fight to the last breath! Show them what Nohr is made of!"
It was strange for Kyverian to see the bellow of a seasoned battle commander come out of the lanky frame of the mercenary, but it seemed to improve the morale.

Kyverian was no stranger to seeing people bark commands. Those with the temerity to take the initiative were always the ones to earn his respect. If Fila had thought she hadn't earned the Nohrian's respect before, she definitely did now. There's an appreciative nod her way when the volley of dark magic bombarded the Samurai, greatly demoralizing the approaching forces. The Kinshi knights were no where to be seen, the employed ninja from earlier were still recuperating from the earlier volley. Those that still persisted came clashing into the offensive line, pushing back what remained of the Hoshido vanguard.
"FOR NOOOOOOOOOOHRRR!"
The shout was repeated amongst the vanguard, as Kyverian shouts his patriotism amongst his fellow vanguard members. The Samurai are driven back, the warriors following behind hold the rear line, to prevent the Nohrian's from pushing through them. The mages by Fila take this opportunity to save themselves, however. They've expended much in these two volleys. Now, it was time to make a beeline for the bought while the vanguard held the enemy back.
Weapons clashed against weapons, the black and purple Nohrian colors crashed against the red and white, pushing the Hoshidan forces off the path as the civilians follow behind the mages. Soon, Kyverian takes note of this development, impaling his bronze blade through an opposing samurai, before he broke from the front to maintain a retreating defense line.
"Hold steady! We make our retreat now!"
Orders are soon barked, his fellow captains aid him in ensuring that what soldiers hadn't fallen in the clash came back with them to the boats. Other boats had since fled, unable to wait in the chaos. But there still remained just one boat left, amidst the burning town. There still was one last escape route available to what remained of Nohr-aligned folk. However, their moment of of triumph came to a sudden halt, as the Kinshi knights gradually appear in the vast distance. They were preparing yet another storm of arrows, their bows aimed high, as they get ready to unleash another shower of death from above.
"Raise shields! Here come the arrows!"
Kyverian was all too familiar with the arrow storms to let his fellow soldiers die to them yet again. Shields are raised up high as they make their retreat, refusing to show the ground forces their backs, lest they be stabbed from behind.
