The funny thing with the Nohrian sky is that even if the sun comes up in the morning, the land remained draped in a shroud. The light from the window was dim, and insufficient enough to wake the slumbering Madame.
What’s more is that the city was already in a state of activity, and even the tavern on the first floor was serving breakfast to the early-risers.
Yet, nothing beset her from sleeping in, draped and covered by her wings atop the blankets of her bed. Two horns with a pair of branches jutted out from the side, and even though there was insufficient light to wake her, there was enough to reveal the nature of scaly skin beneath the membranes of the wings.
Due to her tired state and a level of carelessness, she had failed to make sure the door was completely closed when she locked it. Thus, the “tomeless caster,” as a certain man had put it, was in for a rude awakening.

And a rude fire emblem awakening it was. Kyverian had fully anticipated on the Madame to be on the same early morning routine as him, given she had gone to sleep far earlier than he had. Soon enough, he had entered the tavern, making his way upstairs with the gaffer's recommendation of eggs and toast, with a side of bacon. The door is soon touched with his right shoulder as he pushes his way inside.
"Madame, I have brought you-" The sight of not the Madame, but some sort of dragon creature in the shape of a Human had abruptly ended his sentence. His eyes rapidly blink, unable to process the sight of what he was bearing witness to. Soon enough, he backs on out, closing the door silently behind him for but five seconds. He soon re-opens the door again, to see if what he had just witnessed was a product of something he had consumed prior to his arrival.
"Ah, it appears I haven't gone insane." Soon enough, Kyverian keeps the tray in one hand, the other slowly moving for the bronze sword by his side. His cautious approach was anything but reckless, his narrowed gaze trying to ascertain just who it was that laid in the blanket while wrapped in wings.

If nothing had woken her before, the door opening certainly did. The half-dragon form lay completely still when it opened,
Shoot! Did I leave it unlocked?! I could’ve sworn it was locked! Did he have a key to get in here?!
The thoughts ran through her mind, but before she would get up to relock the door, it was reopened, and the heavy footsteps of the captain approached.
Well. It was bound to happen. Better try to make this a thorough explanation... but first, the lights.
There was a green glow that appeared for a moment, and her scales shifted from blue to an emerald shade of green. Then, her figure swiftly and suddenly lunged from her bed to the curtains with rushing wind and great speed. When the curtains were closed, the figure leapt against the door, slamming it closed. Her wings spread open, with sharp talons at the ends of the forelimbs poised to strike.
“You,” came a low, distorted growl, her eyes clearly glowed a crimson color, “You should have knocked first.” Kyverian

Just when it seemed as if Kyverian was going to run the bronze sword straight into @madame 's stomach, her voice was all that he needed to know that his action would have had dire consequences for himself. The sword is soon gently set against the wall, both hands now held underneath the tray as the captain gradually and casually, offers the breakfast that was intended for her. "It's time to rise and shine. I intended to show my sincerity from yesterday. So... Here." The tray is handed over as he maintains eye contact.
Never did his eyes drift anywhere but her face, a fact that might seem peculiar to some. But for Kyverian, concentration was key to conversations. He didn't want to point out the wings, nor the scales. Nor the shift of her scales from blue to green. One could readily see that he was trying, at least, to mind some of his words. But as he often does, Kyverian cannot help but blatantly obvious.
"You're clad in scales, wings, and your talons are pointed dangerously in my vicinity." A fact that has him raise a hand for her to lower the forelimbs away from his body. The talons looked capable of piercing his armor, a scenario he'd rather avoid when it came to dealing with the strange and unusual. "This... Answers many questions that I have but... You could explain."
Soon enough, whether she had taken the breakfast tray or not, Kyverian moves over towards the door, closing it shut and making sure it was locked. He didn't want a repeat of what just happened, only for someone else to mis-read the situation, or worse. Kyverian soon returns back to the Madame, awaiting an explanation for what he was seeing, rather than going off of assumptions.

The Madame stared at the plate of food, but instead of reaching out with her hands, the fingers on the ends of her wings took the plate from his hands and slowly brought it to her hands. As he had put his sword away, her wings folded, and at his gesture of raising his hand, her wing talons rested against her shoulders, the membrane appearing like a cape draped on the floor.
She stood in the middle of the room, and in a few moments, her dress reappeared on her body, her wings melting into her being. Furthermore, her gown, which was once maroon, became an emerald shade reflecting her scales.
Before she would answer him, she proceeded to eat the toast with the eggs and bacon, practically inhaling the food without so much of a thought toward chewing.
“... I won’t mince my words, captain,” the Madame stated, her voice had returned to its normal state. She walked to a table and placed the plate down, “I’ve told you before that it is not in my nature to lie. A curse on my reputation if I do.” She squinted at him, “My secret is something I keep so closely that I will not hesitate to eliminate liabilities, but it is not something that brings me fear if it is discovered.” She lifted a hand toward him, her face softened, “Nevertheless, I desire to exercise mercy. As of right now, you are in my good graces for speaking well of me to your superiors, but far be it for me to let you speak of seeing me in my most natural appearance. All this to say...” her eyes became piercing as her irises slimmed, “... can I trust you with my secret?” Kyverian

The The Madame was kind enough to put on some clothes, by the time he had returned to the conversation at hand. The sword is taken from its resting spot to put it back in the sheathe, his attention now wholefully upon the Madame without any worry of having to mention her changed form. The sight was burned into his memory, but the captain was now asked a question that demanded an answer. And an answer she'd soon receive, after his thoughts were aligned to speak what he wanted to say.
"And just who do you expect me to share your secret with?" His gaze narrows, both arms crossed in front of his chest. His back is planted firmly against the wall, both eyes upon the Madame as he continues his reply, "I rarely associate with people of superior rank, as well as those of equal and lesser status. But, since you're privy of secrets, it's only fair I share mine." A deep breath is taken, as Kyverian feels himself about to speak more than what he'd usually do. But, for the sake of secrets being shared, he felt it best to do so. The helmet on his head is removed, a sense of vulnerability overcoming him as Kyverian stares at the black plates and purple plume.
"Nine years ago, I was not a soldier... But a nobleman's son. We were not rich, but we were not poor either, holding just enough wealth to make us a cut above your average merchant. In terms of nobility status, we were at the bottom wrung, as we were made nobility since my great grand father's discovery of a type of berry that makes the most excellent of wine. We made an extensive fortune, but all that came undone by my father's greed."
Both eyes are narrowed upon the helmet, hands tensed against the metal as if he was crushing a skull. But he soon relents, continuing the story as best as he is able.
"After going into debt, we lived in the Windmire slums, where one of my father's former associates turned knight had taken pity on us. He took me in as his own son and spared them the trouble of raising me any further. I have not looked back since then."
The helmet is soon applied to his head, keeping it strapped as it were before his gaze sharply turns back to the Madame.
"Few know of my origins, Madame. Consider your secret safe, as you keep mine."

There was nothing in his eyes that spoke lies to her. In his words she sensed his anger, and perhaps even his pride being squeezed as he told of his wretched life story, and furthermore, what appeared to be his deepest, innermost secret.... and he didn’t even know half of her story.
The Madame let her arms hang off her sides, her pupils returning to their former, more round shape. Her face softened, and her eyes carried a pathetic look.
Did she owe him more secrets than just her appearance? Yes, and more.
Was this wise? He was a loyal soldier of Nohr, a country of oppression. Their king was a tyrant who sent soldiers into the Hoshidan border to steal and take lives.
Yet, he was also a man of poorer origin. A man who could not choose his destiny except to be another soul sacrifice for his country. For that, she could take pity on him, and perhaps... perhaps even empathy.
“From where I come from, Captain Kyverian Alto,” said the Madame, “To give a person their true name is to grant power over them to the receiver. This is the reason why I prefer to give my acquaintances the title of ‘Madame.’ Few know my name, and those few, I consider them my friends. They are in my deepest trust, and to whom I will by no means betray.”
At that moment, her horns once again grew from her head and began to glow. Her wings extended from her back, and the appendages resting on her shoulders like a cape. It was as if the knight aspiring beheld a noblewoman from another land.
“My name is Madame Fierre Bergstrom,” she bowed her head, “Know that you are now one of my confidants.”

Although of poor origins, Kyverian was and still very well a Nohrian. There may come a day when the two appear on opposite sides of the fence. But until such a day arrived, Kyverian was, for all intent and purposes, a confidant for The Madame to trust. Even after she gave her name, Kyverian kept his brave face, before eventually, it melts away. Trust, confidence, and shared secrets. All of them were suppose to be the recipe for a friend.
A fact that gradually edges out the corner of his lips, curving itself until it forms a small crescent. For once in what must have felt like ancient times, Kyverian had smiled. "Thank you." He spoke up, soft and uncharacteristically friendly. A heavy burden felt like it had just removed itself from his chest, Kyverian's shoulders genuinely droop. But, the moment of relaxing is cut short, once he remembers his duty. As if by some terrible magic or curse, Kyverian stiffens right up, his smile gone faster than it had emerged.
"I accept my role as your confidant."
He soon kneels, keeping his head bowed as one arm is crossed in front of him.

The Madame turned her head up at his thanks, and for perhaps for a few meager seconds, she saw a greater vulnerability, no, not even vulnerability... trust, absolute trust! Yes, for a moment, his signature stoic personality had left him to something more familiar, more genial. Furthermore...
He smiled. It was no sneer, nor a simper, but a genuine grin! Even in her own mind, she could not fathom such a man cracking any beams.
Alas, it was for a brief moment, and so he returned to his normal self as he honored their agreement.
“Oh,” she grinned, her hands lifted to her eyes as she pressed away tears, “This is always so beautiful to me. I hope we can cherish this friendship in the future.” She clapped her hands together as her form reverted to her human self. “I’ll still refer to you as Captain in front of your comrades, but know that I will prefer your first name from now on, Kyverian! I hope you will do the same for me, but please, discretion when you say it?” She twisted her heel bashfully, “You’ll get to know the others who know me by my first name, and in their company we can easily converse. Capiche?”

A sense of familiarity was a new, but welcomed experience. Few held Kyverian's trust, if one could say he even had that much. To become a confidant of the The Madame meant that there was going to be more to know of the woman. But of course, Kyverian eventually rises up, the soft smile now on his face instead of the usual stoicism. "Of course..." He spoke up, eyes closed as his hands are placed behind his back. Kyverian's posture straightens, allowing Fierre to shift appearances without his prying eyes.
"This friendship should last a while. You're not exactly against Nohr, nor are you my enemy." But, as do all thing so, the smile fades. But, at least he wasn't scowling. "However, I do not believe I should mention what will happen, should you ever do decide to side against Nohr. But, make no mistake: I will not reveal you to anyone, regardless of your goals and or activities. That much should be said, at least." Manaketes already have it difficult enough, there was no point in making life all the more difficult for her than it already is.
"I do not share secrets." He spoke in reply to her request for discretion. "You, I do not mind... But, don't expect me to converse with others so readily." Even if there were others that knew of Madame's true name and nature, Kyverian simply wasn't a very friendly. But, he'd at least give it a try, even if all possibilities of said bonding was bound to fall flat. "But... I suppose I could try."

“Hoho, trying is good...” the Madame squinted her eyes, “And I appreciate your warning, Kyverian, but suffice to say that far as my terms go, I am in no position to pick a side.” She paced back and forth as she spoke, “My greatest desire is neutrality. Your wars, while greatly important, cannot be something I can partake in unless my own life or the life of my closest friends are threatened. Therefore, I dread the day where I cannot help but choose.”
She stopped in place, “Nevertheless... this establishment has been built upon Nohrian ground, and its patrons are mercenaries and hired toughs who call Marcarth home. If they are hired as soldiers for this war, then that is their business.” Her head turned toward him with an inquisitive look in her eyes, “As for myself, I will not show partiality to any customer to my inn. I live and act according to irrevocable morals, taught to me since the dawn of my existence.” A saucy smile spread on her face, “... In layman’s terms, I am simply too old and much too stubborn by human standard to change my ways.”

There was going to be a time when Fierre was going to have to choose her sides, when her friends were in danger. The implication alone was enough to have him somewhat guarded, his stoicism returning in gradual time. "Ah, of course." His hand is raised dismissively to banish the thought from his head, before he got in-depth with his assumptions. "So long as you do not wander where you should not, your life should be very well left alone. usually... I cannot vouch for the less than reputable among the Nohrian army."
There were still many individuals that did not live up to the expected, romantized version of Nohr. Nor did they try to, at the very least. But the mercenaries were going to pick sides, as were the people. Many battles were going to be fought, with no visible end in sight. "So long as you yourself do not side against Nohr, few will ever bat an eye in your direction. Some will... But, not many." The talk of age does have him confused, as Kyverian's facial expression twists and contorts itself to reflect that. As ever, The Madame is reminded of the other side of stoicism.
"Too old? Just how 'old' are you?" His eyes glance down to her feet to the top of her head, yet there hardly seemed to be a single hint to her age, other than being roughly within the same physical age as himself. He soon slowly squints in suspicion, placing a palm underneath his chin.

At his question, Fierre shifted her hip, “... I’d say a rough estimate to be nearly... oh, I don’t know, time is totally lost to me, ohohoho!” Her laugh was accompanied by a flamboyant curl of her hand toward her chin. “When you’re my age, your memory really doesn’t help you. Manaketes are generally ancient creatures, and some of us really don’t care to recall unless it’s incredibly important to them to remember. I’ll at least give you a gauge: at around a millenia, a manakete has the appearance of someone in their adolescence.” Her shoulders raised emphatically, “It’s mysterious to me, but I suppose that’s how dragon’s are...” Her face became melacholic, “... You watch friends grow old and die, and sometimes I wonder if it’s even worth it to make any for the emotional trauma.”
She proceeded to sit down on a wooden chair next to the table, and a long, heavy exhale proceeded from her, “... Of course... I think having people I love and look forward to seeing... I think that keeps me sane.” Kyverian

Kyverian attentively listens to The Madame and her explanation. Though, the lack of an actual answer that satisfied his curiosity was heavily apparent. His eye lids lowered, staring with a flat, somewhat annoyed expression. "Honestly, I don't know why I bothered asking..." His exasperation is fully expressed with a palm to his own face. But, the Manaketes were ancient creatures, that much, Fierre had explained. But unlike Humans, they could live for an awfully long time, a fact that eventually catches his attention.
"Ah... l suppose there are drawbacks to living so long. But, there are Manaketes as old as you, correct? You cannot possibly be the only one that's ancient, by our standards." The comment of watching people grow old and die soon has him shrug, completely understanding of the whim's of fate and the Human lifespan. "It's better that way, that Humans don't live for long. We'd never see the end of many villains, if we could." He soon takes a seat at the table, across from Fierre.
"What of your current friends? Preferably, the friends you've made here..." Kyverian taps the table with his index finger, curiosity bidding him to speak, "Here in Nohr." Unfortunately, he didn't seem to have any interest in Hoshido-based friendships.

Fierre should have expected his callous response. If only he knew what it was like to live what felt like an eternity... and the pain that followed each death of both friends and enemies.
Alas in her eyes, Kyverian ’s sight was too narrow to understand the pain fully. This war may have already caused him to be cold to the concept of death.
Oh, well. Experience is his only teacher now.
“Naturally so,” Fierre replied, she leaned on the table as she twisted her finger around her bangs, “Manakete as old as I am are incredibly few and far between. To meet another manakete of my age is an extremely rare occurrence, and most are technically still living their first millennium.” Her finger pulled forward as her hair escaped, forming a neat curl. “... Friends I’ve made here... hmm... I have many acquaintances, dear. Those who I am friends with hail from foreign lands apart from Nohr and Hoshido. Suffice to say that you are the first real friend I’ve ever had here.”
A moment later, she pressed both her elbows on the table and linked her fingers together, then turned her head down so that only her eyes were visible. “... That said, I’ve already made enemies with a certain woman. Maybe... you know her?”
