“Virna-san,” Atsushi turned with a vein upon his forehead, “I would appreciate it if you did not pry open scabs that are still healing.” His hand forcefully opened the top of the backpack, “If feeding you will curb your appetite to ask into my past, I will do it. So please wait for me.”
He worked quickly, taking firewood from a nearby pile and setting it alight using a knife, flint, and a dry piece of cloth. Water was procured in the wok from a stream close by and brought back to the bare ground.
He reached into the backpack and began sorting out vegetables for him to use. Tomatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, soy beans, cabbages, radishes... there was simply an abundance of food. There were even a couple freshly caught salted fish wrapped in parchment.
“Perhaps I shall score these for grilling...” he murmured, “... Maybe I’ll cook these sweet potatoes, too...” He glanced up to Virna, “... Do you have any... grievances to any vegetables?”Virna Sainz
She huffed as he turned her down and she looked away from him. If he didn't want to tell her than he just had to say so. She crossed her arms over her chest and glanced over at Soultan, who was giving her a look of disbelief. Her mom always said she was tender to being told no, but she just didn't like being out of the loop. She pulled her hijab down and shook out her fluffy white hair before she laid against the furry beast at her back and beginning to braid some of the long pieces.
"Nope," she spoke, her tone a bit short as she looked at what the monk was doing over the tip of her nose. "I've never been picky. Food is food." She pushed her bangs out of her face and sighed lightly before she glanced down at her rough feet.
"Say Atsushi," she waited until she caught his eyes again and gave a small smile. "Uh- Atsushi-san, sorry. Do you know if there's a hot spring around here?" She kicked a small pebble near her foot and she watched it tumble in the dirt, biting her bottom lip while chewing over the next question.
"So.... are you traveling by yourself? You don't need to tell me your story or anything.." She coughed nervously before proudly looking towards the sky. "I was just thinking, whenever I leave town, you could tag along if you're heading my way. It's pretty dangerous for a monk out there alone." She sighed softly before she murmured under her breath, "Not that I could offer much protection.."

“Good,” the monk nodded, “Very good. It would be a shame to see someone waste food out of pickiness.”
Oh, yes, a small bag of rice sat at the very bottom of the backpack. That was something he would save for himself...
“Izumo is the best place for that,” said he, “I’m making another round southward.” With his knife, he reached over to a green bamboo shoot and cut it down, then proceeded to score the sides of the salted fishes. Upon the length of the bamboo shoot, the two fishes were slid on and placed next to the fire. The water-filled wok was placed on top of hot coals to boil, and the sweet potatoes were also scored and placed in close proximity to the fire.
Another object was pulled from the backpack, this time a large, basket-like case. He placed the green beans and cabbage in this basket, then placed it over the wok.
“Hmm...” he sat back down, “... I am always traveling alone. Bandits leave me alone because I have nothing of use other than my staff, and... well, they know well enough an itinerant monk can be the difference between life and death.” His head dipped down, “I would... not mind it if you traveled with me, however. I never had a traveling partner before.” Virna Sainz
The bright dancer watched carefully as he pulled thing after thing out of his seemingly endless pack. "Izumo huh? I haven't been there in a long time." She pushed her newly finished braid over her shoulder, allowing the long white piece to fall against her skin. "Have you ever been to the desert, monk-san?" She chuckled as glanced at all of the delicious foods that he was placing near the fire.
"I don't want to burden you though, unfortunately bandits try to pick on me often. Once they realize I'm a lonely dancer I become an easy target." She chuckled and rolled her eyes, remembering that she barely got out of her last scuffle. She would always miss the bracelet that she bet away for her safety. "I just thought that maybe we could keep each other company.." She shrugged, feeling her cheeks warm up a bit. "And to be completely honest with you, you're one of the most trustworthy men I've ever met in my travels. It would be nice to have someone to talk to that I wasn't worried was going to steal me away in my sleep." She laughed her awkward feeling off before stretching her tan arms over her head.
"Say, have you ever met a kitsune or a wolfskin? I'm starting to think they're something of a myth." She took a deep sniff of the food he was cooking and gave a wide smile. "And where did you learn to cook like this? It smells delicious."

Atsushi shook his head to her question of any visitation to the desert, ”Īe, I have not braved a desert.” He listened a little longer and turned his head sheepishly at the mention of her newfound trust of him. He wasn’t used to these compliments, but at least she was sincere.
As far as meeting a wolfskin...
“I have,” he said with an expressionless face and blank tone, “It was a chance encounter, and one I still feel discomfort from to this day.” His back hunched over as he tightly hugged himself, “... If you want to meet him, you must get lost in the wilderness.”
He arched back at her question of his cooking abilities, almost mustering some pride in it. “Eh... well, it runs in the family. There is not a single person from my—“ He stopped himself and grit his teeth behind his lips, although his visage remained more or less static. “... Ahem. I just... I can cook.” Virna Sainz
She laughed and wiggled her legs as she saw him grow sheepish. It was so cute to see anyone get bashful, but especially a man who seemed to take himself so seriously. "If we do travel together you'll have to come to Diredune with me. There you can learn how to cook all kinds of crazy foods and my mom has always wanted to meet a proper Hoshidan. We barely count because we're so out of the way of everything else."
At the mention of a wolfskin she promptly sat up and kneeled in excitement in front of the cooking monk. "Really? Did it not go well for you? What was the wolfskin like? Did you get lost?" She had so many more questions but she decided it was best to reel them in for now, not wanting to cause Atsushi to sink into himself again. She watched as she hugged his knees and she blinked a few times, feeling bad for bringing it up. "You don't have to answer those questions if it's too much. Forgive me, Atsushi-san, I have a very large mouth." She blushed and turned her light eyes towards the cooking, loving the steam that was coming off of all the individual items.
She was all ears (haha) as he began telling the story of how he was from a long line of cooks. Her left ear twitched as she stopped and she wanted to beg him to continue and to tell the story as it truly goes, but she had thrown enough salt in his wounds for one day. "Well this all looks amazing. Regardless of how you learned to cook or where you come from, I'm happy to be sharing this meal with someone with as much skill as you." She chuckled before giving him a playful wink. "Besides, beats cooking for myself. I wouldn't be able to tell salt apart from sugar if I tried."

Diredune. That sounds rather exotic. The prospect of traveling to any such place was actually exciting. Even more was the thought that he would learn more types of cuisine than those he learned in Hoshido.
“W-well, don’t get me wrong. You simply need to ask the right questions. I wander the wilderness often when I want to be alone,” he stammered again, “The wolfskin and I happened by chance. He was very, very big, especially compared to me. If he picked you up to his eye level, your feet would be off of the ground.” His body shuddered just from the memory.
The monk let out a quiet sigh at her compliment, but all he managed to eek out of himself was: “... as far as sugar and salt goes... just... just taste it.”
He glanced up to the fishes that were being toasted by the fire and pulled the sticks holding them out of the ground. With his cutting knife he broke the skin to examine the meat.
“... Yosh, here,” he said as he held the stick toward her, “It’s ready to be eaten.” Virna Sainz
