SANCTUARY COMPROMISED Mai, Ethan, and Raz Behind Raven's Rest Inn Afternoon
It's been so peaceful lately. Ever since she and Ethan had warded off those bandits, there hadn't been a single brigand in town for the past three days. To Mai, this was a great accomplishment. She can finally give rooms to more honest folks like Ethan and Raziel, and feed her hungry patrons a near unlimited supply of dumplings.
But such a thing as peace always begged the question... how long will it last?
It was nearing the time that Ethan would be leaving after his stay at her inn. It was sad, as she had built a friendly relation with him. If he were to leave now...
No, no, no. She can't rely on him to protect the village. She'd have to handle things herself, bandit or no. He had his own life to live as a wanderer. As bitter as her heart was on this matter, she had to accept that fact. She just hated to see friends leave.
Mai stuffed her tome within her obi as she prepared to walk to the market around the corner. However, there was a buzz in the air. There were voices and murmurs in the distance as a group of men in foreign military standards strode through the town. They were lightly armored... perhaps a scouting unit?
Regardless, they were coming her way. Villagers along their path were being interrogated left and right. It seems subtlety wasn't in question.
"We're looking for a young male Nohr with a scar on his right cheek, lower jaw," they had said, "he's a traitor of Nohr who may have come through here. Report him to us and we'll give you gold in return!"
A young male Nohr with a scar on his right cheek. They were looking for Ethan.
Mai turned herself around in an attempt to make herself scarce, but she was too late. A hand was laid on her shoulder and she was forced to face her captor.
"You there!" a gruff man exclaimed, "Where do you think you're going?!"
Shoot.
The man looked down her figure and spotted her tome. He immediately pulled it from her obi and shook it in front of her face with an accusatory tone, "This tome is Nohrian! Where did you get this?!"
"Give that back!" Mai exclaimed as she tried to retrieve it, but it was quickly thrown to another soldier.
Ethan was sitting in the main hall of Mai 's inn. He was enjoying an early lunch while thinking about where he would head next. The great wall had been a nice site and the vendors had some interesting things. He remembered hearing something about a town with a long merchant district. That would make a good destination. So far, the odd jobs were paying well and Ethan had more than enough gold to to buy lodgings and something nice.
In fact he wanted something that fit in more. His outfit was strictly Nohrian and that attracted shifty looks no matter where he went. He figured asking Mai for style advice would work. Despite wandering for little over a month, he hadn't really learned the style. Though, he hadn't really been paying attention.
The inn's main door slammed open and a distraught man rushed in "Nohrian soldiers are close by!" He announced "They're looking for a man. He has a scar on his cheek! One of the men mentioned bright blue hair."
Several eyes looked to Ethan.
"No one do anything stupid." The wanderer warned "Where are there?"
"Out back." The man reported.
"You aren't getting anything back." The Nohrian soldier told Mai. His voice was gruff. He held her wrist tight enough to cut pressure from it. "Now where did you get this book?"
"Let her go Campbell." Ethan said. He stood tall, showing no fear to the face from his past.
"Leigh. We've been looking all over for you. You know, the captain's pretty upset that you ran away. Your little story got all the way up to King Garon and he demands you come back. You've disgraced the tribe Ethan. But since we're old friends, I managed to talk to the King. He promised me that if you gave up.... You won't suffer... Much."

Tch! His grip was like an iron shackle, and any struggling on her part was futile unless she were to give him any information.
Geh! I need some help...
And right on cue, Ethan had appeared like a samurai in glistening mail. What a welcome sight he was, but she still needed to shake this guy off...
Perhaps she would have to use that move. His attention was on Ethan, anyway!
"GOMEN'NASAAAAAAI!" Mai suddenly shrieked as she suddenly ducked down and launched an open-palm strike upon the man's chin.
"Gufo!" Her captor released her as he fell backwards, his hand reached to his throat. Without skipping a beat, Mai ran to the soldier who had her tome and closed in for a second time with the same move, smashing her palm into his neck. The tome flew out of his hands, and the innkeeper caught it.
"LEIGH-KUN!" the innkeeper cried as she ran behind him. Her head poked from over his shoulder as she appeared to hiss at the men. "Who are these guys?!"
"His name is Kody Campbell." Ethan said, watching his childhood friend struggle on the ground without remorse. His bored look was gone and had been replaced with an angry glare "We came from the same tribe back in Nohr. You could say we were friends."
"Could say?" Campbell said, rising on shaky legs. He coughed "You're showing her basic Nohrian combat techniques. That's even more of a crime Ethan."
Ethan paid him no mind and continued explaining himself to Mai "We were conscripted at the same time. But where I wouldn't give into the Nohrian way, he took to it like a blizzard."
"You ran Ethan." Campbell said "And your little girlfriend here just attacked us. Now you're both in trouble. Now you both have to come with us. In fact, only you have to come with us Ethan. She's not important. We'll just leave her here, covered in cuts. Don't worry. We'll leave her pretty little face intact."
"You hurt her and I-"
"Hurt her?" Campbell scoffed "She won't feel a thing. She'll be dead."
Campbell pulled his spear up, pointing it at his childhood friend. Ethan drew his sword. The blade reflected portions of the sun. Campbell twirled his weapon and whistled. The constant beat of mighty wings filled the air and a wyvern exploded from a nearby grouping of trees. The might beast settled behind him and roared. His partner stood up and drew his bow.
"Order sir?" The man asked, looking to Campbell.
"Why don't we leave that up to Ethan. So tell me. What are you going to do?" Campbell leaned forward, devilish smile taking his face.
"Run Mai." Ethan whispered "You don't need to be involved in this."

Ah. So that was their connection, not that it was any of her business. How troublesome... now she was already mixed up in his problems.
Still she wouldn't abandon her good friend like this.
"Baaaaaaaaka," Mai stuck her tongue out to him, "I'm already involved, you know? My heart was prepared for such a situation." Her crimson eyes appeared to light like a fire. "It's thanks to you that I've gotten stronger in the past few days. I would be ungrateful if I just left you to die here, and besides, you probably wouldn't last a second without me!"
The wyvern was a bit of a surprise. What a pest! Perhaps that would be the subject of her fury.
"Oi, bakayarō who hides behind his pet lizard!" she exclaimed to Campbell with a growl, "You're a long way from home, and even harassed the citizens of Hoshido, to boot! Shirasagi won't turn a blind eye to that!" She puffed her chest out and pointed aggressively at him, "News spreads around quick, you know? Maybe it's better if you just left us be!"
All these things she declared while she was safely behind Ethan . She was calling a bluff, after all. The capital could probably care less of poorer towns in bandit country.
"Now isn't a time to get cocky." Ethan said flatly. The wanderer's grip tightened, his knuckles lost their color. He could feel the twisted wires of his sword's hilt digging into his palm. He had no illusions. Campbell was probably better trained than he was, but Ethan hadn't come all the way to Hoshido to just give in.
"What's wrong Leigh?" The man asked as his wyvern hissed "You look scared. It's the dragon isn't it? I've been promoted since you've left. Someone has to do the tribe justice. So what do you want to do?" He turned to Mai "I hope news spreads quickly. Let the capital know that we've killed useless people. They haven't done a damn thing about Fory Jinya, what makes you think they'll help you?"
Ethan charged, blade at his side, and jumped. Campbell hadn't moved. He stood there, stone faced, as his partner shot Ethan. The wanderer hit the ground hard and his blade dived headfirst into the dirt feet from him. The arrow had pierced his calf.
"You're weak Ethan." Campbell taunted "Just like Hoshido."

In his short say here, Raziel had slowly picked up a few more chores around the inn. It started slowly with simply chopping wood for Watanabe-san, but he grew restless. In the first chance he got, the man had offered to gather groceries for the woman. From groceries to other small errands. He would be her gofor for the next few days.
Arms filled with bundles of rice, he made his way through the streets of the small town. When he returned to the inn, Watanabe-san hadn't been there to greet him. He shrugged at first. The woman was more than welcome to have her own activities during the day. The rice was taken to the kitchen. That was when Raziel heard the voices. He walked to the back door and stopped just shy of the curtain that hung in the doorway. He listened and learned a bit of what was going on. He pushed the curtian to the side just enough for him to peek through.
Watanabe-san had been an excellent hostess. Raziel hadn't met any of the other tenants at the inn in his short stay there, but this man that was with Mai now was somebody he had seen once before. Raziel could never forget that bounty hunt against the Nohrian spy. The swordsman had ripped him to shreds so mercilessly before Raziel could even blink. Where was that man from the other day? He had gotten pinned down so easily. What caught him with surprise the most was the wyvern that this Campbell stood behind.
"There is quite some racket back here," Raziel spoke up in order to make his presence there known. His hand lazily rubbed at the back of his head, like he just stumbled into this. "Are you alright Watanabe-san?"

That fool! Just what does he think he's doing charging like that?!
"Leigh-kun!!" Mai shrieked as she watched the archer let loose his arrow and struck Ethan in his foot. As he went to nock another arrow, the woman threw a fireball at the ground, resulting in a bright flash and a small explosion, throwing dust in the air. This was more of a flashy deterrent to make people run and to give her some space with Ethan. Without minding her kimono, she ran to his side and started to pull at his arm, "Leigh-kun, are you alright?!"
Then Mai heard another familiar voice nearby and she turned her head in that direction. The backdoor was ajar with that tall person standing within, Raziel.
What to do... would she be so selfish as to involve another patron with their problem? That thought was such a pain... but she had no other person to turn to at this moment!
"Raziel-san," she said calmly, "I'm alright, but I can't explain what's happening right now. Would you help us repel these ingrates? I beg of you!" The dust cloud began to fade away now.
Shadowgift Units with Shadowgift may use dark magic.
Now that he was outside of the inn, Raziel could see the people that had attacked Watanabe-san and Ethan. The blue haired swordsman had been the cause of this. Watanabe-san had mentioned a wanderer. From the conversation earlier, it was obvious just what Ethan had been wandering for. It seemed, for some, the past just couldn't stay away. Raziel included.
He stepped forward to stand beside Ethan. A hand went out to help him stand. "Watanade-san has been most hospitable." He grinned. The dragon had enjoyed every moment he had spent here. And for that reason, he would help out the inn keeper. He pulled off his coat and tossed it to the side. He crossed his arms, he had no weapon.
"Mai ! What are you doing!" Ethan screamed as she reached him "You need to leave Before you get hurt!"
Ethan stopped when a familiar face ran up to him and offered a hand. This was the same person that was going to help him take care of the bounty. The stranger's single sentence made sense. He was helping Mai. Ethan took his hand and stood up. He grabbed the arrow in his calf and snapped it.
"To arms men!" Campbell said "What do you have to say Ethan? Can you defend yourself? "You're going to find out." Ethan hissed. "Well then. Guess I'll 'take a good look."

Ethan's blade hit the wyvern's wing and bounced off. The wing retracted and Campbell smiled "I haven't seen anything."

That Campbell fellow will be a tough one to deal with, but the other two with him would also be rather pesky. Given that the archer is capable of shooting decently, he wasn't to be ignored. Being a distance attacker herself (and she's been practicing on her own), she would make him her opponent.

The outlaw manages to see her intentions and ducks out of the way!
"Tch!" the innkeeper spat, "He's quick!"
The innkeeper was a mage, that much was certain. The tall man had no weapons, but it appears he fought with his hands. On the other hand, the warrior he had shot earlier was still rebounding while his boss was belittling him once more.
The woman would be a threat to him, and already she had made the first move.

"Guhe!" Mai grunted as she twisted herself to the side. The arrow scraped through her kimono and nagajuban, leaving a small cut on the surface of her skin on her left arm.
With the dust cleared, Raziel could see another man beside Campbell and the archer. The man carried a lance. Ethan was fighting his opponent. And Watanabe-san had taken to fighting the archer who initially pinned the swordsman down. It left Raziel with the lancer. They wasted little time in getting started. Raziel moved as quickly as he could. He darted out of the area behind the inn and the lancer gave him chase. That was when Raziel started to change. His eyes were the first to change. Then his hands. His body began to twist its shape and he grew into a grotesque form for that moment that was half man, half beast.
"That man's a shifter!" The lancer shouted out. He sprang forward with his spear to catch Raziel in the midst of his transformation.

The head of the spear got caught within the hard armor like scales of the dragon's body. Raziel shook it off like little had happened, but drops of blood fell to the ground beneath him where he hovered above the man.

The dragon lashed out at his enemy lancer and slashed at him with his large claws. His hand racked across the exposed skin on the mans arm, leaving a long gash.1-100·1-100
Campbell watched his men jump to fight and they were drawing blood. Ethan's little Hoshidan mage wasn't very skilled. She wasn't a threat. In fact, an arrow would drop her soon. A dragon shifter was surprising. Richtor would have a lot to deal with, but he had a lot to prove. They both knew the dangers of coming to Hoshido. Let them fight. Let them prove their worth.
Campbell looked down to his childhood friend and smirked "A dragon huh? You did always have a way with words, but they wont help you now. It's your turn Ethan." Campbell said "Take a good look."

The spear caught Ethan, forcing the wanderer to roll onto his back. When the second attack came, Ethan parried it and rose to his feet. Blood seeped down his cheek.
"What exactly am I looking at?" Ethan asked and Campbell's face twisted with hate.
The fight has begun.
