Leaving the town behind them, the Madame blazed the trail forth into the forest, running by a claimed, age-old adage "discovering the road untaken." While the fact stood that Leliana had a horse, the Madame was obstinate, insisting on walking with her own two legs. They travelled for several hours through the woods, and eventually, they stopped at a natural, empty clearing of trees.
"Ho," the Madame huffed as she stepped into the clearing, "This is a good spot to take a breather. How's the horse, Leliana?"

Leliana watched the Madame, letting her take the path as Horus trotted comfortably along. There wasn't much to say, so instead, she looked over her equipment, cleaning her sword with a practised ease, the gentle rocking of her horse not disturbing her long practised rhythm. As they arrived at the clearing, she looked up, shaking her head. "Oh, uh... Horus?"
The horse snorted in response to her question, not even breathing hard. Tobias meanwhile, who had been sleeping on the horse's head, let out what could only be a derisive snort. He pawed the head, before leaping from the head to the ground, padding around for a moment, before finding a comfortable place to nap.

The Madame nodded her head to Leliana and patted down the skirt of her dress. “Good, good... because according to the surroundings, I’d say we’re very much lost. Ah, but this was intentional. Since I am writing a book on surviving, I wanted to practice the self-sufficiency that I’m teaching.”
She pulled her journal from her side pack and gestured back to the kitsune, “So! I’d like to know what you would do if you were ever lost in this kind of environment. What’s your first step?”

Leliana paused as she slid down from her horse, eyebrow slowly creeping up her forehead. "You managed to get lost... this quickly?" She cocked her head, before shaking it. "Very well, the path is... Ah, alright. Well, first things first, you need shelter, and fire. Once you have those sorted, you can move into food," she started to explain, gesturing vaguely around her. This was hardly her first time in the woods, and it showed. "Beyond that, there's not a whole lot you can do beyond picking a direction and heading in it. Generally speaking, that's back the way you came," she continued, almost lost in her own world.

"Ho, good girl,'" nodded the Madame, "But we should not forget water. I've heard tales that men could last weeks without a single crumb of food, but water? Three days tops before you become a dead prune."
At that moment, she lifted her nose in the air and took a deep breath.
"Hmmmmmm..." she turned toward Leliana, "Do you smell anything nearby? Human or animal? I'd like to know before I do something rather..." Her arms linked together behind her, "... unnatural."

Leliana conceded the point with a tilt of her head, before looking around, her nose and ears twitching in the light. She shook her head, before a hand drifted to her waist, where it pulled a small knife free. The blade sung through the air as she threw it, the steel flashing before it vanished into the bushes. Taking a few steps over, Leliana grunted as she bent down, and when she stood back up, a snake, pierced through the head, was in her grasp. "Not anymore."

The Madame’s eyes brightened at the sight of the dead snake. “Ooh! Save that. That’ll be dinner for us—er, that is, if you don’t mind snake. Now...” she stepped away from Leliana and rolled her shoulders, “It’s been a little while since I did a little fly-around!”
A moment later, the dress upon her back appeared to melt into her skin, replaced by a pair of terrible bat-like wings. If the scent of manakete was not already apparent, it surely was now.
“Watch the ground,” her voice, while still cheery, was deeper and slightly distorted, “I will return in a moment.” In the next instant, the woman curled down and bounded high into the air, then opened her wings to catch the wind. She glanced around briefly, then noted where they would find a body of water.
With the goal set, the Madame returned to the ground with a slam and rushing wind. Her wings coiled back inward until they became part of her maroon dress.
“There’s a pond nearby,” she announced with her normal voice, “It isn’t far.”

Leliana blinked as the woman produced wings from her back, though she was not entirely surprised by it. She had been able to do similar things, once upon a time. Giving the half-dragon a slight nod, she returned her attention to the snake, using her knife to expertly dig the fangs, and the venom sacks free from the dead creature. Producing a small glass vial from her pack, she emptied the venom into it, sealing it with wax and cork, before nestling it in the pack, making sure it would not crack.
Once the Madame landed, Leliana smiled and nodded, wrapping the snake up like a rope and moving to grab her horse's reins. "Shall we go then?"

“Yep,” the Madame nodded, “Let’s go...” Before she would resume their little expedition, she turned to stare at the snake that was in Leliana ’s possession. “Hmm... we should probably bleed it so that it tastes better when we cook it. I have a bit of salt and pepper to season it with...” She shrugged her shoulders, “Just a thought. Onward!”
Thus, they went a little further until the venue of a small clearing with a pond opened up before them. A modest little creek fed the pool with fresh water, and not being a stranger to drinking water straight from the ground, the Madame knelt down and cupped the water in her hands to drink.
“Ooh, it’s quite cool,” she giggled as she brought her drink to her mouth, “I don’t know about your constitution with unpurified water, but it makes little difference to me.”

"Can't say that I've eaten snake before, normally I just take the poison and leave it for the animals of the forest. Doesn't hurt for them to get a free meal once in a while," she said, waiting till they were at the clearing to release Horus' reins, letting the horse decide if he wanted to drink or not. "I'm at least 50% wild beast, so I think it should be fine," she replied, crouching down to drink some of the water herself, before gathering a small pool of it in a second waterskin. "I'll boil it later, so I have it clean when I need it."

“Hoho, fifty percent beast?” the Madame chuckled as she stood back up, “I suppose that’s true for us stone users, carrying part of our power within the stones to keep us from going off the deep end.” She placed a hand on her chest, “That said, I never considered myself half a human. Not that I consider them lesser, but it is difficult for me to wrap my head around being half a dragon and half a human if I am, at the end of the day, a manakete.”
Yet, she paused as she placed a finger to her lips, “... Then again, is that not the definition of half-dragon? Good heavens, I should stop thinking so hard about this.” She wiped her damp hands on her dress and cleared her throat awkwardly. Leliana

"Aye, fifty percent. I don't know if it is the same for you, but I can hear it sometimes, just on the edge of my perception. It begs to be let out. Wants to be free," she gave a canine smile as she stood up, brushing her hands on her coat. "A shame then, that I disposed of my beast stone many years ago." She shrugged, and meandered back to her horse. 'I cannot speak for you, but I find thinking about it brings me a sense of peace, for a moment at least. Regardless, you want to start a fire?"

I don’t think a single snake would be sufficient for both our appetites.” Her foot stamped on the ground, “After twenty minutes, we’ll return here with what we’ve found. "I could hear it, whispering in my mind when I had it with me. I have not favoured being controlled, and that level of power... absolute power corrupts absolutely, so what would great power do?" Leliana smiled and nodded, drawing her sword from its scabbard slowly. "Very well. And if by some miracle of terrible fate you run into trouble, do the same. I would hate to have put effort into a book that will never get written."

Oh, power. It certainly had that wretched side-effect of getting one's head in the wrong place, and as for the Madame, she too had a period of time when the destructive power of her own draconic calling nearly brought places to ruin.
Yet, that was a story she decided not to tell Leliana--at least, not yet.
"Yes, yes, of course," said she with a playfully dismissive wave of her hand, "If I really do run into trouble, it'll be by someone who could really put me on the edge!" By that discourse, however, she can only think of one person in particular. "See you in a little while, my friend."
With that, the Madame proceeded into the woods on her own.
