My end goal has no substance ... Peace has no substance
A lithe figure emerged from the wall of trees north of a grand city, clad in simple wear and carrying a hanging satchel. A feminine, handsome face lifted to the walls, and dull, melancholy eyes fixated themselves on the gates.
Another stranger came alongside the young fellow, his face hidden by a wide-brimmed straw hat and donning clothing that masked his shape.
"This is Izumo, learning one. We monks often come here to meditate within the pools of tranquility. Perhaps here you will find the peace from the turmoil in your mind."
The youth turned his head to the larger man and smiled glumly, "I appreciate the trouble of taking me along with you. May we meet again." The two exchanged a brief bow and parted ways as they entered the city.
These faces... so relaxed and carefree. What a marvel it was to the wandering itinerant, but how out-of-place for the times. Do people come to this city to throw away their cares and live in willful ignorance of the danger beyond the canyon?
The thought became sickening. The wanderer immediately moved away from the crowded thoroughfare to walk the quieter streets.
There wasn’t many places Cas could find comfort outside of her little shop. The streets were always so crowded with travelers and fellow townsfolk. Their laughter and carefree air practically suffocated her, but that’s what made this hidden place so much better. Here the laughter faded and the air was lighter, more breathable.
To call it a field would be an over exaggeration. It was nothing more than a small patch of grass that held some pretty flowers. It wasn’t so hidden, in reality. Just a few feet from where Cas knelt was one of Izumo’s more busier streets. But the lack of shop or anything eye-catching meant less people. Another reason why Cas liked it so much.
“Now now, don’t be fussy…” The woman hated the process of collecting seeds. Removing a flower’s pod never sit well with her. There was many more there, and there would be many more in the future, but it still unsettled her. “Gotcha.”
Pods and seed heads sat before her as Cas pulled out small pouches for each of them. Separating them later would mean running the risk of forgetting which seed belonged to which flower. It had taken her too long to learn that splitting them immediately was best. (Not that it mattered what she did now. All of the pouches looked the same anyways.)

Each opening that led to the open street allowed a louder muddle of noise to fill the itinerant's ears.
Perhaps I can stock on vulneraries... thought he, And perhaps find some form of security as well.
The monk did not plan on staying for very long in Izumo. Money was a commodity he lacked, and except for a few gold pieces that his temporary guide had provided him, he was virtually broke. He needed to remedy that with a job... but...
Could he easily find a job in a place like this? The worst he could do was sell his own clothes and staff for a night at the local inn, let alone feed himself at some shady izakaya.
... Ah! Is that a patch of flowers? Perhaps creating a cheap incense from the essence from its petals would help!
The monk began his advancement toward the patch of flowers, imagining what he could do with his potential product... when a small figure beat him to it! This person was already removing... something! It's hard to tell when a person's back is to him.
His heart suddenly dropped at the sight. This person must already be selling incense at their own price...
... but wait! Perhaps he needed first to find out what they would be using the flowers for!
Yes, that would be good. The fellow quietly approached from behind and cleared his throat.
"Excuse me," he began with a timid, girlish voice, "What are you using the flowers for?" Cas
izakaya - a Japanese bar that sells inexpensive dishes, accompanied by alcoholic beverages
The voice behind her was shy. Too quiet to cause her to jump yet it’s sudden appearance had her tensed immediately. The person looked as timid as the voice sounded. Harmless, Cas decided then. She relaxed and stood, her eyes nervously moving from place to place.
“Ah.. I’m not sure yet…” Cas looked to the stranger then the pouches in her hands. “I thought the flowers were pretty, and I wanted to try to grow some in my garden..”
The possibility of trying them in remedies never occurred to her. There weren’t flowers like these in her books, and experimenting with new subjects had the potential to be dangerous. Unless she tested it on herself? Cas wasn’t one to get sick often, but remedies weren’t just for sicknesses, right?
“I could try to use them for medicinal purposes, but the final product wouldn’t be finished anytime soon. Not until I had a steady supply of flowers to use. Why do you ask, miss?”

He digressed. Medicinal purposes? Was this girl an alchemist? She didn't look at all like a Hoshidan or Izumite. Messy brown hair, a nonnative dress? It screamed gaijin to him, nevertheless, he wasn't inclined to say that aloud.
Of course, what she had said about the flowers themselves was troubling. This patch wasn't readily available for harvesting. At most, it'll take more flowers than what is on the ground there to make a single stick of incense.
What a lucky thing that she had appeared! He could've made a big mistake removing all of them.
"I see, that's good," he nodded, "I was curious because I was hoping to use them to create a sample of incense, but as you said, they aren't available in great supply, so I will withhold." He continued, "Of course, I find myself more interested in yourself. Are you an alchemist?" Cas
gaijin - (In Japan, or in this case, Hoshido) a foreigner
Incense? Cas looked to the flowery patch. Surely there was enough to make a small sample. Then again it wasn’t like she knew the process of making the aromatic substance. Still, refraining from creating the sample due to the flowers’ limited numbers earned her appreciation.
“Herbalist. I’m nothing special though, I’m still learning.” Once the attention moved from the flowers to herself, Cas shifted uncomfortably. Her hands wrung the bags of seeds. Had the pods and seed heads been weaker, they would’ve been broken under the movement. “I believe there is a shop around here that sells incense. That would be much easier than making it yourself, right?”
“Is the incense for a ceremony? Meditation, perhaps?” Nothing on the villager stood out to her. Nothing that would indicate what the incense would be used for, at least. Compared to the people of Izumo, they had been dressed rather simply. A traveler? Those weren’t uncommon here. “Are you from Izumo?”

Ah, so she was actually more of a student of the botanical. That made more sense.
A gentle bob of his head and the fellow leaned away, "Meditation, yes. I'm afraid I am too poor to even afford my own incense at the moment. If none of my attire or questions have revealed it yet, I actually am a practicing... monk..." His words were hesitant, bearing with them the burden of the fact that she had mistaken him for a woman.
He lifted his hat from his head and, while pressing it against his chest, bowed gently toward the girl. "Er, I should introduce myself. I am Atsushi, and I'm actually from Shirasagi. I don't mean to trouble you with my presence." Cas
Oh. Cas’ face turned a bright shade of red, her hands wringing the bags more intensely now. Her mouth repeatedly opened and closed. A fish out of water is what she imagined herself to look like, and it’s exactly how she felt. The monk didn’t seem too angry with her mishap. More unsure than anything else.
“I apologize for my earlier assumption! I hope I haven’t offended you..” The woman bowed deeply, keeping her eyes locked onto the ground even when she rose back up.
“Your presence is no trouble at all!” Cas was thankful for the opening and happily took the out. Anything to forget about her embarrassment. She returned the bow with one of her own and, what she hoped was, a smile. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Atsushi of Shirasagi. I go by Cas. I’m from-- Ah, doesn’t matter anyways.”
“You said that you couldn’t afford incense? Please let me give you some money, or possibly some flowers to use? I have a garden outside of my shop. There’s plenty for you to use. It’s the least I can do after my mistake.” Cas had recovered enough to look at the man once more. “And I’d hate to leave someone in need, especially a monk."

Cas. That was a rather uncommon name, even more that she would not fully announce her origins.
Rather, it didn't matter!
Curious, yet that was a matter from another time. The notion of a money offering was much more tantalizing. Given that he only had a few coins from a previous handout meant for food, the luxury of buying incense with another person's money was more... No!
What a horrible thought! Such thinking was to the level of a thief and a sponge beggar! There must be a wiser course of action...
"Cas-san, your offer is most kind and generous," spoke Atsushi with a tender beam, "But far be it for me to receive anything from you without equity. While I may be a monk, I am not shy to put my hands to work. That would most certainly fulfill my greatest need."
He cleared his throat quietly, "But, if you desire to simply send me away, I will also be content."
“I’m not just going to send you away. As I said, I’d hate to leave a monk in need.” She’d hate to leave anyone in need actually. Cas shifted to the right and began to think, her hand already moving to the hair over her shoulder.
Even if he was a monk, she had expected Atsushi to accept the money and go. Or, that’s what she had hoped would happen. Work at the little shop was slow. Who would want to get herbal remedies from her when Izumo was filled with more well known and experienced healers? Still, it was very unlikely he would change his mind on simply taking the money...
“I really have no problem with just giving you the flowers you need but if you’d like, you can work at the shop one day for every flower you wish to use. I can’t guarantee you’ll be doing much though. Customers don’t visit as frequently as they use to, but some do come in from time to time.”

Atsushi pursed his lips as he processed her words. A single flowers as payment? Even for work, that's a rather small offering.
Well, the poor are never in a position to barter. This was out of good will, after all. He felt the need to be grateful that she even considered payment, especially after Cas had noted the lack of customer frequency.
"That is a generous offer," said the monk with a nod of his head, "Please show me to your shop so I may begin helping you promptly."
Cas gave the monk a tight lipped smile before beginning the walk back to the little shop. Why couldn't he just take the flowers? Atsushi wasn't a bad person by any standards. In fact, the woman considered the monk to be polite and kind even when he had the right to be upset. Though, those traits probably came with being a monk. She couldn't imagine someone of the shrine acting any other way. Cas could feel the seeds through their holders at this point. Was she really that tense?
It seem justified in her mind. It had been years since anyone else worked at the shop, and even then the helping hands had been family. The only guests she had recently were injured people who happened upon her path. (Maybe she should take this as a sign and switch professions..) She should've raised it to three flowers per day instead of one. Surely it doesn't take that many flowers to make incense, right?
The little road come to an end and there stood her family's little shop in all it's humble glory. It was a little further than the other homes but Cas preferred it that way. Little flowers bloomed in front and on the sides of the little abode. The back was where most of the garden was. Everything else was kept inside and tended to carefully but Cas. Her fingers, in a slight mess of hair and bag string, were kept tightly clasped in front of her chest.
"Would you prefer to see the garden now or later?"

The monk stopped several feet away from the entrance of the shop, and while Cas' question did not fall on deaf ears, there was a brief silence that overcame him.
His old hometown had a place just like this. Sure, it was a little smaller than this one, but the qualities remained: little and modest. Nevertheless, the nostalgic feeling that emerged in his throat was suffocating. That old place no longer existed. It should've stayed in the recesses of his memory.
Atsushi shook his head as he snapped back into reality. "I-if you could, that would be fine." He proceeded to move by her side, "Lead the way, Cas-san."
There was a strange look to the monk. Like he was present, but not all there. Goodness, if she can a coin for every time she’s heard that about herself. It was concerning, to say the least, but it went unmentioned. Their looks were the same. Maybe their feelings about it being pointed out were the same too. So Cas faked a small smile and walked around the shop. Her curiosity was burning, however. What had caused such a distant look?
The garden was nothing spectacular. Flowers and herbs grew in an organized chaos. And that wasn’t even mentioning the plants inside. Moonflowers clung to the shadowy walls of the shop while the other plants leaned into the sun. It wasn’t much, but Cas felt a swell of pride every time she saw it.
“Despite the mess, it’s actually very easy to tell the flowers from the plants to the herbs. The flowers,” Cas motioned to the wide spread blooms, “are all in one general area. I don’t water them everyday, since that would only kill him. The herbs and plants grow a little ways past them. They sort of grow together in a mixed group. I’m not a big supporter of it but that’s how it was when I arrived here, so I’m not about to change it now.”
“If you’d like, you can walk around and take a closer look at everything. I’ll be right here if you have any questions.”

Atsushi observed the interior of the small shop and its many quirks. As a previous farmer, his insides squirmed at the sight of the disorderly plants, and if it were his own shop, he would immediately have gone out of his way to rearrange everything into neat sections!
Alas, this was not his shop, but at least Cas had acknowledged the mess...
"If nature intended it, then it must be so," said Atsushi with a nod. He briefly studied the colorful explosions in the garden, then looked up to the walls to the plant life growing upon it. I wonder how long this building is going to last like this.
Oh, perish the thought.
"I would appreciate the tour, Cas-san," he continued, "I'll confess that I'm already confused just by looking at them..."
