Afternoons in this town were relatively slow. People were about their business, and most patrons were already out of the inn. The only people who were around were hired workers who change beddings and clean the surfaces.
As a result, Mai was not busy; also as a result, she had the opportunity to present her unusual request to her recent guest: Ethan . With banditry on the rise, it was wise for her to prepare for the worst.
“Leigh-san!” the woman called as she pushed her money box inside of a safe, “I wish to speak with you—privately, please!”
Considering the size of the inn, her voice would easily carry through the walls.
After countless hours of walking and almost three nights of sleeping on the hard ground, Ethan was happy for the well-used bed. The night passed fast. He awoke with enough energy to stroll about the area and enjoy his morning. He returned to the inn of course. Ocean had some sort of request. Ethan walked up to the counter, offering a smile. He brushed his hair aside before saying "Hey there. What do you- Privately? Sure thing. Where would you like to go?"

The innkeeper brought herself around the side of the counter, then poked her head into the kitchen. There was no one there, thus she beckoned him in.
"I've another selfish request, if you would oblige," she whispered to him, her hand reached down to the book in her obi and she held it up. "I need to know if... ah..." Her heel began to dig into the ground, "... ohh... I'm not sure how this would work... but..."
She sighed deeply and looked him straight in the eye, "I... I want you to show me how to fight. I won't be using this... it's too dangerous." She put the book back into her obi, "Just simple techniques. You're a mercenary, are you not? I figure someone of your caliber would have excellent unarmed abilities... um... but... you probably would barely feel my fist on your skin." Ethan
Ethan followed her into the kitchen. Despite only knowing Ocean for a single night, he trust her. Fighting at someone's side did that. It forged a trust deeper than any conversation. He watched her movements. Watched her lift the book and talk about it as if it was some dangerous device. Was it because it was Nohrian? Her voice somewhat echoed as she talked. Her kitchen had good acoustics.
"It's only as dangerous as you are." Ethan said replied, in reference to her book "Learning to fight, whether with fist or sword, is going to put you in a lot more danger than throwing fire from behind a counter. Look at my arm? See the cut? Are you sure you want that? It's not easy to get punched in the face, or take a sword to the chest."
He stopped and thought about his answer before saying whether he was a mercenary or not. He wanted to say he wasn't, but Ethan couldn't remember the last time he told a story to someone in exchange for gold. "I suppose I am a mercenary." He admitted to himself out loud "But I'm not trying to endanger anyone. I could show you something, but it wouldn't be good if it brought you any harm."

Mai stared at his scars and immediately grimaced. Despite making up her mind in self-defense, she didn't know just how much that entailed. Sure, she would see the occasional grizzled brute stroll in for want of food and rest, but did she consider the story of each of those scars and the pain involved?
Nope! She's an airhead when it comes to those things, nevertheless she pursued her resolve.
"I must try!" she said with a small bounce of her knees and clenched fists, "If I happen to lose my tome, what would become of me? I need a plan B against those situations! After all, any fight with another human is one of survival! Please teach me, Leigh-san" Her voice dropped in realization that her passionate speech quickly raised in volume. Ethan
It was almost like she was expecting another fight. Why else would she be worried about learning? Anything he could teach in an afternoon would be worthless against a true warrior, but she had spirit. Ethan liked that. His people didn't. Anyone that was willing to fight, deserved the right to. His face deadened and Ethan nodded.
"Alright Ocean." Ethan's voice was soft. Understanding, yet regretful "You want to learn a bit, I'll show you. But you need to know, you won't be able to learn a few hours and be good enough. Like you said, last ditch. Plan B. No other options. That's the only time you can."
If Ethan was a mercenary, then it was time to act like one. He'd show this woman what he could. Take his coin, then be back on the road. He was a wanderer first, mercenary second.

Mai immediately became composed as he began to speak. Exactly as he said, she wanted this to be a last resort when all else has failed.
"The kitchen is no good, though," she said, "Let's head to the back where we, um... you know... spread ashes. I'm sure we can manage a small lesson there." She gently took him by the hand as she led him to the backyard. Her hands were trembling from fear and excitement; fear, because she doesn't know what the outcome of this lesson will be, excitement because she'll know how to fight back in a pinch.
Now that they were in the back yard, Mai removed her obi and kimono, revealing an inner kimono known as the nagajuban. She was fine with this layer of clothing becoming dirty, and it was much lighter and easier to move in.
"Alright, Leigh... sensei!" she said as she stuck her chest out and folded her arms behind her back, "I'm ready for your instructions." Ethan
Ethan pulled is sword off and set it into the still damp grass. His pack dropped next to it. He reached into his pocket and took out a black tie. He bound his hair into a azure tail as he spoke.
"The thing about fighting is, everyone does it differently. So no one style is going to be better than others. Some people will tell you to never do things, while others do them and perform them well. I myself never use my feet. It's dangerous and I don't want to risk losing my balance during a fight. Ocean never fall. You leave yourself open and with very little defense. Now, like this."
Ethan held his left fist in front of him, while holding the right fist behind it.
"What I'm doing here is setting up my dominant hand. The left stays out. I can use it to knock blows away, or jab if I need to. I use my right fist for stronger hits. Keep your feet parted, never cross them. You lose that balance, you're dead. Now you can throw quick jabs out with the left hand. Keep the fist solid. Pull it back fast then strike again."
He showed her a few times.

Everyone has different styles. Never fall over. Dominant hand back. Don't lose balance.
Mai's lips pursed as he spoke. There was so much that she had to keep in mind when fighting unarmed. Perhaps these things come naturally to someone who keeps practicing...
"Okay," she said. She began to inch her feet apart in respect to the posture Ethan had set himself in. Then, that's when she began to realize that her bare legs began to show.
"Ah!" Mai squeaked as she suddenly put her feet back together, her face began to blush gently, "How inappropriate this fighting style is..." Still, she had to manage her position somehow. The bare minimum! That would be enough, right?
So, she planted her feet modestly as to not show her legs. She put her fists up and let out a huff of air, "Okay. Will this work?" Ethan
Ethan's eyes narrowed, then rolled. He drew a deep breath, and said "You can't worry about modesty, especially during a fight. The person you're fighting isn't going to care. Hesitating for absolutely any reason could get you killed. Fighting itself is an inappropriate act in itself."
Ethan paced for a moment before stopping "Actually, maybe they are thinking about it. Maybe they're thinking about what they can do to you when you're beaten and not able to defend yourself. You don't always get to decide when you're going to fight. So you need to push everything out of your mind. The only thing that matters is defending yourself. Understand?"
Ethan's voice was stern, bordering on rough. He had become his military trainer. He had become a Nohrian soldier.

Ah. He's right. What does it matter if it's a fight for survival? She would take a lesser shame than an even greater one. Just as he said: in a fist-fight, modesty was out the window. There was no room for it, nor will there ever be.
The new strength in Ethan's voice was harsh, but she accepted it. If modesty was nothing, then her feelings should not matter either. It made sense. His words made her strong.
"I understand," Mai replied with a new tone full of seriousness. She assumed the position, planting her feet in the ground where she remembered them. She raised her fists, her left forward and right back, and clenched them tightly. "How's this?" Ethan
"Pull your fists closer to you. You don't want them out far. You need to defend yourself too. That's why they're there. People swing, you get your hands hit and not your face. Now if someone swings at you, you deflect and return. Punch me."
As Ocean struck him, Ethan stopped her hand with his dominant fist. His left hand pushed her arm away and he struck out with his dominant hand, stopping inches before her neck.
"It's a basic counter attack. You're supposed to hit the face, but I prefer neck. I always try to disable an enemy. You end the fight quick, less of a chance of you getting hurt,"

As per his instruction, Mai pulled her arms a little closer to her face. Yes, she did feel a little more secure with her face being protected.
Now, her move. She attempted to emulate his attacks earlier, but already the second lesson was being introduced. Her eyes widened briefly as he his fist came too close to her neck. If this was her regular thought process, she would've quickly reacted in a petty manner and slapped it away.
Regardless, this was a good trick that he showed her. According to an old elementary lesson on the body, the throat contained the windpipe. Striking it would cause breathing problems, which can be fatal if crushed completely. How dangerous.
"Got it," Mai replied with a small nod. She put her hands back up again, "that sounds like a useful tool." Ethan
"Now I'm going to move slow. I am going to punch you slowly. You are going to do what I showed to you. Cross the arms, then strike me back with your dominant hand. After that, you are going to punch me. I want you to get used to striking fast and returning. Don't go slow on me okay? I want you to actually hit me. Like I said, you need to learn how to strike fast."
As Ethan said, his arm moved slow towards her sternum. The strike was well telegraphed and Ocean would definitely be able to deflect it.

Well, this was good. After all, she needed to get used to the feeling of actually punching someone. Before she made her move, she tried to decide the best place to hit him so that it wouldn't be at all damaging.
Or... maybe she should try hitting him hard. It wasn't like her punches did much alone... unless she had momentum to accelerate her.
That's it. Momentum was key to having any actual effect on a target. That's how an ax-man managed to cut wood, only that his entire force was put into the axe. In this case, the axe was her arm, and moving her body in tandem with it is...
Enough thinking! She was about to receive his fist.
With a quick exhale, she moved in. Her left arm parried his fist and she swung a right hook to the side of his neck.

The hit connected and her arm felt the shock of his muscly neck. Her right arm felt wobbly in an instant.
"Ahhh..." Mai mumbled as she withdrew from him. Would this really work out? She didn't even pull her punch. Ethan1-100
