Location: Raven's Roost Late night Ethan Leigh and Ocean
The night was far from young. Ethan had been walking for hours, refusing to sleep in the open because the skies threatened with rain. He had passed a traveler hours ago who said that an inn rested up ahead. Somewhere in the night, Ethan saw the faint glow of distant lanterns. Hope rushed through his body and the aging man picked up his pace. A sign outside read Raven's Roost. He shifted the sword on his back and yawned. Suddenly he was tired.
Pushing his way into the building, Ethan found the building mostly empty. Those that did linger seemed to be of a rougher crowd. He checked his coin purse, making sure it was secure. He crossed the room without meeting any eyes. Finally at the counter top, he greeted the innkeeper. "Hows' the night going for you?" He asked.
His gray eyes seemed threatening by candlelight. He made sure that his ragged blue hair was swept aside. His smile was weak, but he smiled nonetheless.
"Do you have any rooms left? Anything to eat also?"

The innkeeper was seated, her hands fluidly pushing wooden pegs along a rather new abacus. The newcomer was a... welcome sight? Surely he appeared like a mercenary given his sword and unusual clothing. A man of Nohr, he was, not that there was anything against them in her heart.
That's not to speak for the other, more unsightly patrons who had taken notice of the stranger.
The woman readjusted herself to fully face the man, then linked her fingers together. "Yes, sir. You can have both room and board for two pieces." She leaned to scowl at the onlookers sitting at a table, "... But unfortunately, my regular menu has been depleted. I can prepare some hot noodles for you, though. If... if that's fine. I'm very sorry for the poor accommodations in that regard..."
Ethan turned around, following her cold eyes. He looked back to the innkeep "The board sounds fine. Anything is better than the rain. It's been threatening for hours." He untied the coin purse from his gray pants and fished out two gold. He held out, glancing back over his shoulder for a second "You don't have to worry about the food. I don't want to have you cooking. I understand that it's late."
Behind him, the fire crackled. Several of the rougher looking patrons laughed loudly at some unheard joke. Something about them set Ethan on edge. Somehow, the woman didn't seem fazed by them. Her cold glare was a comfort. He pulled his sword off his back and let it rest against the counter. "You know of any places nearby offering work? Nothing long term." He clarified.

Poor guy, she thought in her mind, I know a hungry man when I see one.
Her other guests were becoming an eyesore with their behavior. It's not often that a bunch of rotten apples stroll in to irk other guests. There was something they weren’t telling her with their “daily excursions.”
In any case, the mercenary. His inquiry was no surprise to her given his freelance type of work. She wasn't sure if the local smithy would pay him for blowing air into the furnace, nor if he could even manage his own sewing.
Then that's when it hit her. The bounty board. She looked in its direction but her face dropped. There was nothing there.
"Etooo..." she drawled briefly, "I was going to say 'check the bounty board,' but beholding it now, it is empty..." She looked back at him and let out a chuckle, “I know I have a personal request, but ahh, I’m not sure if a handsome wanderer like yourself would take it on…” Her head gently nudged in the direction of the rabble rousers, who suddenly became silent, their ears hard-pressed to hear what she had to say.
"Personal request huh?" He smirked at her playful compliment, then followed her nudge. The brigands made no attempt to hide the fact that they listened. Some of the braver ones looked over and met his gray eyes with a challenging glare. He looked back to the innkeeper "And what would you have me do?" He asked.
His fatigue faded. He blinked once, suddenly awake. His breathing steadied. People did things differently in Hoshido right? There was no need to get so worked up, but he was ready to move. If it was a fight, Ethan was ready to go.

The stage had been set. It didn't matter if the tavern would suffer some damage, or if any patrons were sleeping upstairs... after all, the patrons were all here, eating her food stock like pigs, using money they had taken from some poor sap on the road today. That much was certain after she received bloodied gold for payment.
No degree of preaching would reach their thick heads. Their conversation regarded taking "this" and "that" from some "loser" or "losers." Enough was enough. These guys chose their careers poorly. She had been waiting for this kind of opportunity.
"Fufun, it's quite simple, really," she replied with a curled smile as she pulled a dark book from her obi, "as it is a personal request, however, I would like to tell you my name. I am Watanabe Mai, you are?"
The men began to get suspicious. They rose from their cushions and placed their hands on their brittle swords.
The book. He saw plenty like it back in Nohr. The gates were open. His heart sped up. He heard the chairs shift and the steps of heavyset men.Ethan's smile faded. His foot slipped underneath his weapon's sheath. "A pleasure to meet you Mai." His voice was lower. His entire disposition turned grim "I am Ethan Leigh. Traveling bard and man at arm. It's a pleasure to meet you Ocean" He turned his head towards the men. Two of the four had gotten up. Their hands stood firm on their blades. He spoke to them.
"Now why would you be standing like that. All ready to fight. You could give a man the wrong idea."

How handsome was this mercenary with his fierce eyes. This was something Mai never saw before in a person.
Perhaps he is a worthwhile friend to have, even if it was for a moment.
"Maa~! Please take care of me, Leigh-san," spoke Mai with a smile as she brought herself around the corner of the counter. Her expression shifted to one of piercing hostility as she began to address the bandits, her tone cold as the night's rain, "Sorry boys, I'm afraid inn policy is never to discriminate against fellow patrons. That, and I cannot accept the dirty money of another man." She threw a small sack of gold at one of the bandits, but the sack just hit his stomach and fell to the floor, scattering gold all over the ground. "I'm afraid you'll just have to take your filth and get going, or we'll just have to show you the door."
"How rude this woman is to respectable people like us!" one of them spat, "we should punish them as respectable patrons!"
"Fools, you think you can handle us?" said another as he glared into Ethan's eyes, "Give us your weapons and armor, and we'll let you leave with your miserable life."
Ethan was still with his back to them, head turned slightly to meet their eyes. He listened to their thinly veiled threats and ran the situation through his mind. Two men drew closer. Swords. Just get a bit closer. "Hey now. You sure you want to do this." Again, they drew closer "If anyone needs to be punished, it's you."
"And just what are you going to do about it?" The man asked, standing feet behind Ethan.
Ethan smirked. "Take a good look."
His left foot jumped up, lifting his sword into the air. He caught the sheath and in one quick twist, drew the blade and sliced the man behind him. Blood seeped from his chest. Ethan took the chance and kicked the man back while he stood surprised. The other man drew his sword and lunged at Ethan. He jumped back, blue hair waving. The brigand's blade cut into the counter. Ethan slashed out, aiming for the man's arm.
I am starting combat.

The man pulled his arm back and Ethan scuffed a chair. Thinking quick, the wanderer returned the blade across the brigand's shoulder. The man cried out and looked to Ethan. Death was in the brigand's eyes.

It's one thing to see blood spilling. An immediate reaction was to help the person who was bleeding, but in this circumstance, the offenders were the bandits.
For one who's never seen a battle up close like this, this was somewhat of a shock. Regardless, she had to proceed, for her and her new partner's survival. This was something she was set to do. The bandits have chosen their path of bloodshed, and it is in blood that it must end.
With a little quiver in her voice, she opened her tome and began to chant. She practiced very little with tomes, thinking she never had to rely on it... well, now that such a situation was presented before her, she truly wished she practiced more. All her coolness from before was quickly evaporating.
Her target was the second brigand. "[Fire]!" she nearly screamed.
ATTACK PHASE
Mai's attack against Brigand 2: M4ingTrh1-100
Damage Dealt: 13/2 = 6 Brigand 2's HP: 10
A small flame shot from the tome and struck the bandit on the surface of exposed skin. He yelped in pain as burns developed on his skin.
The scent of blood was quickly over taken by the scent of searing flesh. It was disgusting, but fighting wasn't supposed to be a comfortable experience. He'd just have to make it worse for the other people. After the man recovered from being slice and his partner recovered from being burned, they both attacked Ethan. He was the closest, with Ocean being safe behind her counter. The cut man lunged forward, while the burned man struck after him.

The blade came fast, but Ethan had been prepared. He parried the first man, kicking him back immediately after. Quick reflexes twirled Ethan away from the second hit. The wanderer stood free and ready to fight.

The sliced brigand recovered from his kick fast, lunging back at Ethan as he cursed. Brigand's attack on Ethan 1-100 Hit, damage dealt: 1 Ethan's new health: 16
He sliced at Ethan, with his blade cutting across Ethan's jacket. The wanderer barely felt a thing.
The burnt man followed up with an attack of his own. He screamed, demanding blood 1-100 Missed.
The burned man struck out, but found no luck. Ethan kicked a stool in his path, giving him enough time to skirt away from the blow.
Ethan returned his own strike, jabbing at the burnt brigand. 1-100 Hit. Damage dealt: 9 Brigand two's new health: 3
It poked into the man's chest, leaving a patch of red to stain his outfit. The burnt man started fighting with more desperation. He understood that Ethan held more skill.1-100·1-100·1-100·1-100·1-100

Ah, so much blood. If people lose too much blood they'll die. Were they really going to kill these guys? The amount of bloodshed simply felt unnecessary.
Or... perhaps there was a way to help them? Cauterization of wounds will stop surface bleeding, that much she learned in medicine class. If she could burn the wounds, maybe that would stop the bleeding and lessen the amount of mess.
Was she right in the head at this time? One could imagine Mai's eyes like spirals as she shakily attempted another attack. With another withered shout, she re-targeted the second brigand.
Mai's Attack on Brigand 2: 9VtlS2if1-100
Damage Dealt: 13 Brigand 2's Health: 0
Brigand 2 has died!
FOOSH
Her wish was granted. The bandit had stopped bleeding!
That said, the man's entire body was engulfed in flames. With a guttural shriek, the brigand fell to the ground and began rolling, but the enchanted fire did not quench until his entire body had burned to ash. Dust to dust, as the old saying goes.
Should she have not caught herself, she surely would have fainted. Mai hadn't realized just how much power she had in her hands. She just killed a man.
Mai gagged as she sat back on the ground, unable to stand.
His friend twisted to the ground, his body a burning testament of death. The sliced Brigand stood stunned for a moment. Regret flashed through his mind, but he wasn't going to pick today to start running. The woman was powerful and that blue haired idiot. She stood safe behind the counter, but he could at least catch the guy. Yeah.He was going to die, but blue was coming with him. The brigand placed his sword ahead of him and charged.

As far as she knew, the battle was already over. Would they be taking it too far by taking this other fellow's life as well?
Would it be right to mercifully take him out of his misery?
So many questions raced in Mai's mind as she stared at the suffering bandit. His fair-weathered friends have abandoned him, leaving him at the mercy of a mercenary and the innkeeper. However, this was her selfish request. No more customers came after these bandits appeared, and she was getting sick of it. She may have feigned strength by ignoring these rogues with their every pass at her, but was it weakness that she was portraying outside?
"Wait, Leigh-san," spoke Mai. She staggered to her feet and walked over to Ethan, "Please let me. I showed too much cowardice to these good-for-nothing lowlives. I'm going to set the record straight." As she said this, she opened her tome and raised her hand to the bandit's head. Her own eyes had become empty and indifferent.
Mai's Attack on Brigand 1: ThbK2VGF1-100 Bandit 1's HP: 0
Bandit 1 has died! "[Fire]!"
The head of the bandit was swallowed by flames, then the body. The figure crumpled as the flesh hissed.
With that, Mai vomited to the side as her legs collapsed beneath her. She felt as if she would faint.
Ethan lifted the sword above his head. The brigand started shaking. "Please." The roughian stammered "We're just trying to make a living."
Ethan held his eyes for a moment, finally saying "So am I."
He almost killed the man before Ocean stopped him. Ethan turned towards the innkeep as she spoke. He shrugged at her words. Hoshidan's and their strange codes of honor made little sense. He stepped aside and watched the man burst into flames. The charred flesh reuplsed his nose, but he was fixated until Mai fell. Ethan turned quick and knelt beside her.
"Are you okay?" He asked while reaching for his flask of water "Here you need a drink." He offered it to her.
