Personality: Susano is a genuinely kind man with no true aspirations as far as being a warrior. He merely seeks peace, after experiencing the full effects of the war and the havoc it wreaked on either side's people. Regardless of origin, he sees all life as having worth, and will do everything he can to protect either side's civilians.
Though he does dislike war and conflict, Susano's nature has been molded into one of a mercenary, though the work he does take on is limited and speaks much of the person he is. He does protection work for villages, or vanguard work for merchants and caravans, occasionally even taking up work as a farmhand for places that don't have enough. When it comes to payment, he merely asks for his belly to be full and for clothes to be on his back - anything more is useless to him. He is a man of the people.
When faced with prejudice against himself, Susano makes it a point to show no hostility and attempt to calm his aggressor, unless attacked, at which point he will defend himself. When seeing others experience it, he will always step in to defend them.
Susano cares deeply for civilians on both sides of the conflict, but he truly despises both armies and their leaders for allowing the conflict to continue despite the chaos heavily affecting either side.
Biography: Born in a family with a long line of Hoshido soldiers, it was inevitable that Susano would become one as well. All throughout his youth, he was told of how great an honor it would be to fight for his kingdom, for his peoples' freedom, and to smite the tyrants of Nohr so that he might protect those he loved. He never truly saw the merit in this, but being surrounded by those who did, he never saw the opportunity to legitimately combat it. So, he simply agreed in silence, and went about his training like every other member of his family did.
When the opportunity to enlist presented itself, Susano took it with faux joy, and true reluctance. He wanted to make his family proud, but the skepticism about this war and its consequences never left. Nevertheless, he eventually found his way as a Sky Night, and fought in countless skirmishes with Nohr's Faceless. When this was all the war entailed, he began to see the merit in it - if Nohr created such abominations simply to harm Hoshido and take its bounty, they couldn't be good people, could they? That's what he kept reminding himself as he donned his armor and weapon every single day.
But when the barrier fell, everything changed.
The opportunity for full-scale conflict was nothing anyone wanted. When it fell, soldiers' hearts sank everywhere, including Susano's, and he could feel the tension rising in direct correlation. He was frightened of what would come, but they all told themselves Nohr had no backbone - they would simply send more Faceless, Hoshido would claim victory, and that would be that. They wished they were right.
It didn't take long for Nohrian troops to find their way onto Hoshido land. One of the first battles Susano took part in happened just outside of his home, in the middle of the night. Nohr attacked, and in their surprise the Hoshido troops were slow to respond. Despite riding his Pegasus with haste, he never made it to the battlefield in time to protect his family, and they died in their sleep as his village burned to the ground.
Susano was devastated. He sought revenge.
Shortly after this attack, Hoshido forces mobilized, and launched a similar assault against Nohr, raiding its border villages, due to false information being provided that one, or many, were storehouses for their armies. They sought to deliver a crippling blow to the kingdom, and while the sky was blanketed in darkness, they all believed they did. But as the sun rose, Susano saw the true aftermath of the battle - homes burned to the ground, villagers dead or dying, crops razed - it was different compared to the Faceless. These were actual people, losing everything... and for what? Why were they fighting in the first place? Susano truthfully had no idea.
Wrecked with self-doubt and loathing for both sides of the conflict, Susano found it harder and harder to remain a part of the Hoshido army. It wasn't until another battle just days later, where he was forced to choose between loyalty and killing more Nohrian civilians, or pursuing his own virtues and attempting to make a difference, that he hopped on his Pegasus Ryuma and took flight away from the battlefield, never to return again.
A deserter, Susano was seen as scum by Hoshido. Though, being Hoshido born, he was seen as scum still by the Nohrians. This led to a difficult life, but it was one he accepted, so long as it meant he never had to take another life senselessly. He began to wander the land, seeking work as a mercenary or a farmhand, asking for pay only enough to feed himself and his Pegasus, and keep them warm.
Somehow, he was going to find a way to end the conflict, be it through another powerful mage who could craft another barrier, or through finding a way to make both kings compromise. It was a fool's naive dream, perhaps, but he chased it regardless.
