Fila hid the frown at the mages' retreat. She supposed it might've aided Nohr in the long run, saving valuable resources; while a good swordsman took just as long to train as a good mage, a usable soldier took far less time. But it still sat ill-at-ease with her to abandon the front line.
Even with her apprehensions however, she still very nearly went to the ship with them. But... Kyverian was there. And these soldiers had gotten her through a lot. The Kinshi knights would approach to close, and the worn shields might not be enough with all the cuts in them. Fila swings an arm out, hurling one last blast from her Wind Tome at the approaching cloud of arrows before quickly ducking behind a knight. She would stay. They were owed that much.

It was expected that the mages would be the first to fall back. Casting magic so often and for so long without rest generally took its toll on their bodies. Kyverian never expected a mage to stand with him and his soldiers during trials of endurance. But to his surprise, when the Kinshi arrow storm was raining down, there was a single blast of air that completely changed his view on mages. At the very least, one mage in particular, Fila , earned his gratitude and respect. There was no doubt in his mind now, that she was a cut above the average mage.
It was unexpected, as the arrows go scattering everywhere but their intended target. The second downpour was much easier to manage, as the already dented and battered shields hold against the weakened storm of arrows. The Hoshido ground forces halted their advance, the Kinshi knights peeled away from the range of the gust. The Nohrian soldiers saw this as their opportunity to retreat, holding the line while also moving much faster, now that the Samurai were wary of further use of magic. Not a single Hoshido warrior dared to approach, as the weakened forces of Nohr immediately made their retreat. "Thank you." The Knight spoke up, gladly allowing Fila usage of his shield as he did his part and aided her.
Most of the boats had already pushed off from the docks, with just one last boat ready to set sail.
"Move for the boats!"
Kyverian shouts one final order as the defensive line breaks, every soldier rushing to get aboard the boat. Just when it seemed like the Kinshi were closing in to rain down more arrows to the boat occupants, the mages that were already aboard the boat began to prepare a counter-offensive. The first sign of dark magic being prepped to bombard the Hoshido forces was enough for them to signal the horn of victory, refusing to risk losing anymore lives wiping out the last of them. The boat sets sail from the harbor, the waves stirred by the action of violence crashes against the frigate's body. But, they had escaped. They had managed to evade certain death at the hands of a great Hoshido raid.
Kyverian's helmet is soon pulled from his head, debris and blood marred his black plates. Both hands hold firmly to the dented helm, meticulously inspecting the damage done to it, ignoring his various injuries, but external and internal. He had survived an onslaught, both eyes now staring at the razed port town that was once a hub of activity. Now, it laid in ruins; the walls had been badly damaged, the buildings dismantled by Hoshido weapons and magic. All Kyverian could do was watch from afar, as the frigate sailed further and further away. What civilians that were not killed in the chaos were huddled up with their families, mourning their losses. His attention turns away from them and onto his helmet, thankful that the black plates weren't severely dented. The helmet is soon donned again, as he makes his way through the soldiers as they rested to find Fila.
"Thank you." He spoke up, removing the helmet once more, tucking it underneath his left armpit, "Thank you, Fila. Were it not for your well timed magic, we would have lost many more of our own when those arrows came down again." Nevermind the fact that he had at least two sticking out of his body. One in the shoulder, the other stuck in his chestplate. "Normally, I fully expect you mages to be the first to flee, once your magic starts to take its toll. But... Not you. So, thank you. For what you did here today on behalf of Nohr." There's a slight twitch in the corner of his lips, as it was now the first time Fila would bear witness to the usually stoic and reclusive Kyverian smiling in her presence.
Unfortunately, the smile does not last long, as he is soon called away to speak with the other captains, in regards to where they'd be heading next. The Nohrian treads away, disappearing behind the door to the captain's quarters.
Fila went deathly pale as soon as she was behind the shield, having to lean her weight on Kyverian. He would notice she seemed lighter, almost emaciated. Her wind tome was sizzling, the air around it swirling angrily. The book had seen better days, as had its wielder. "Not got another one of those in me... Help me to the boat?" She would have to use Kyverian as support the rest of the way to the boat, gratefully sitting on a barrel once they were aboard. There was a very good reason the other mages had retreated, so as not to end up like her. She had forgotten that. It had been so long since she had had to push herself to her limits like this, but they had been fighting far more frantically. She felt a little bad for judging them, even if she had kept it to herself.
At some point an arrow had hit her. It had dug into her armor,t he tip scraping against her while she walked. As the adrenaline died down, she began to notice the ache in her side, and the blood seeping through her clothing. She winced, looking around and hoping for a medic to come over. She looks up as Kyverian approaches, waving. The color had returned to her face, though she wasn't quite up for walking around again.
She seems... surprised at being thanked so passionately. The comment about mages stung a little, even if she was excluded. But she gave a smile, and it was real. She appreciated the intent, and was glad things had gone well. "Thank you as well, Kyverian. For the timely shield cover if nothing else." As he walks away, she calls to him "See which officers survived! One of them said they'd handle my payment. I think I've well-earned it after this mess."

As if right on cue, the commanding dark mage's presence could be felt, as the rattle of his platemail could be heard from behind Fila A plated hand rests on her shoulder, the mage stepping around to stand by her side. His palm deftly slides down the shoulder, to grasp the hand and to palm a sack of coins into it. The mage's eyes were not easy to see through the slits of his helmet, but Fila could see that he must have been grateful, as well as eavesdropping on her previous conversation.
"Nohr owes you a great debt for saving some of her fair citizens, dear mercenary." The platemail rattles, arm folding behind his back as he glances over towards the captain's quarters, where the meeting would eventually take place, "May Nohr call upon you once more, in her time of need." Although he had used up quite a bit of his magic, he was still moving at a brisk pacing. His head is turned towards Fila for one last time, before he eventually disappears into the captain's quarters.
The pouch of coins vanishes into the palm of her hand the moment her fingers curl 'round it. The battered mercenary smiles, and nods to the mage. She looks the armored figure over, idly envying the money to afford and maintain that sort of armor. Wealthy, at least to some degree. It wasn't always easy to find armor a mage could fight in. And he was certainly experienced; even accounting her mana burn, he was still recovering with enviable speed. A good contact to have, and a good person to be remembered by.
She murmurs to him as he walks away. "Remember the name 'Fila Filigree'. Always happy to do work for the glory of Nohr." No matter how bloody remained unsaid, but she found unlikely a mage of his rank wouldn't have filled in the blanks.
