There was a slight waver in his voice that caused Cas to tense up. Harley's face scrunched slightly, as if trying to hide the pain. The remaining water was tossed immediately and she rushed to dry her hands on her skirts. Guilt began to swell up and drown out the noise around her, turning it into a muffled mess. The handkerchief was wrapped around Cas' index finger as she made work of cleaning the water off of the boy's hands.
"You really shouldn't thank me. I did nothing but make the pain worse." She mumbled slightly. The scratches were now free of the dirt thanks to the water. They were still a little red, although Cas just marked that as irritation from the water. "Ah, I'm sorry about that.. I really hope that the pain wasn't too bad..."
"I'm fine, I'm fine!" He tried to say enthusiastically, as his expression looked pained. She looks so bothered by the possibility of hurting him, that he couldn't help but be pleased. Maybe if he played it up enough, she'd buy him a treat? "D'you think it's clean now, ma'am...?" He asked gently as he could, as he gazed curiously at his hands. They weren't that bloody, but it wasn't like he just strangled someone, there wasn't a reason for them to be bloodied.
Hm, he moved his hand closer to his face, gazing at it in deep thought. 'Do I look cute, when my face is scrunched up?' He thought.
"You really don't have to lie to make me feel better," Cas smiled a little, looking to him when the handkerchief was wrung and folded. "though it is appreciated. You did a good job staying strong like that, but it's okay for you to admit when something causes you pain. There's nothing wrong with feeling bad or hurt."
The scratches looked like they were going to bleed again. Maybe it would be best to patch that up? Cas gently took Harley's hand, biting down the urge to laugh at the adorable scrunch of his face, and held it out before her. With one hand she kept the hand steady, with the other she began to unfold the damp cloth. It was wrapped and knotted snugly around his hand. A pleased grin worked her lips.
"There we are, much better." Cas stood and brushed her skirts flat before offering a hand to the boy. "Come on. You did very well and I think that deserves a reward."
"A-Ah okay..." He whimpered, nodding his head. His nose sniffled lightly, as he stiffened as a result of the pain... Or at least that was how he presented. "It does hurt a bit..." He mumbled, his cheeks puffed out childishly, he tried to be adorable as he could. If he wasn't adorable, while being sad, he found it unlikely someone would still interact with him, if he stopped being cute.
Even if they would keep talking to him, manipulating cute girls was something he enjoyed, which honestly could be considered rather creepy. Fortunately he wasn't too dangerous if he was, that'd be unpleasant. He examined his hand with a sudden awe to his gaze. It was wrapped so nicely, while the fabric could have been more appealing, it was nice not wrapping his own injuries. He smiled up at her, as he accepted her hand.
His bright smile was contagious and soon, she was smiling as well. It was good to see him in such high spirits after the pain. It must be nice to be able to jump back like that so quickly. She went on the tips of her toes and looked around their area. There wasn't much of the city she knew well enough, but after walking around maybe there would be something to stand out to them. More to Harley than her. As Cas really had no idea what the boy liked she thought it best to let him decide the reward. Then would come the matter of finding his parents or caretaker. She wondered if it would be best to ask sooner. It would've been best without a doubt, someone was missing their kid and they wouldn't appreciate her holding him back just to get him a treat.
"Let's go walk around and find you something. If something catches your eye, tell me okay?" She gently pulled him along. "Do you live here? Where are your parents?"
Parents? Harley stifled a giggle, she certainly fell for his cute innocent, and well... Helplessly childish act. Honestly, having looked her up and down, in reality, she looked only slightly older than him. Its amazing how much an act can change how people perceive you. But regardless, if she was thinking he had parents... Well that didn't suit him best it could, it'd make her more reluctant to stay with him. His mind slightly wandered to his family, but he went back to the person before him, swiftly.
"Okey-doke! And huh... Well they dropped me off here, and then they ran off?" He stated plainly, acting as though he didn't know how those words could be interpreted. "I wonder why they left... They'll probably be back!"
The statement nearly caused her to trip. His parents had just left him here? Surely that couldn’t be right.. Maybe they had dropped him off in one location while they went about with their errands. No parent would just leave their child in such a busy city by themselves, right? No parent in their right mind at least. As much as Cas wanted to push out the idea that this boy’s parents just abandoned him, doubt began to form in the back of her mind.
“Maybe they had some work to do. I’m sure they’ll be back anytime. I’ll stay with you until they do.” Cas tried to mask her concern but her fingers were already starting to tap quickly against her leg. “Who knows, maybe we’ll run into them while getting your treat.”
Harley held back a grin, as he scanned her, noticing the small sign of her nervousness. He kept an innocent facade to himself, he had known exactly what he was doing. "Of course they will!" He chirped with a nod, and gently grabbing her hand he peered around.
"Let's go peek around~!" He cheered, as he started walking, trying to drag her. Not using much strength, he played off that he was weaker than he truly was.
“O-Okay!” Cas had stuttered out in surprise. She allowed herself to be pulled along by the boy and while it was relieving that Harley wasn’t fully aware of the potential situation, it broke her heart. What is his parents had just left him here? Would there be a place for her to take him? He had to other relatives somewhere. Her fingers drummed on as she thought.
She was getting ahead of herself; already jumping to the worse case scenario. For all she knew they could be somewhere close by, finishing up whatever work needed to be done, and eager to see their child again. For Harley’s sake, she hoped that this was the reality of the situation.
He was quite pleased, as he imagined how worried she may be. He didn't always get this far, so it was a rather pleasant surprise. As he peered around at the nearby stores, he wondered what kind of treat would be appropriate. After all, if he requested something large, it would put an end to his facade, but if he asked for something small, the lady would likely oblige. At least that was his thoughts on the matter.
His eyes suddenly landed upon a bakery, they had some big things, such as cakes, yet also some much smaller things, like cinnamon rolls. "Cas?" He said lightly, as his finger pointed there. He glanced back at her with a sweet smile.
The concerns were pushed aside when Harley had said her name, his finger pointing to a bakery just up ahead. His choice hadn’t come as much of a shock to her. Cas had believed him to gravitate more towards sweets or plush toys. She hadn’t brought much gold but it should’ve been enough for at least one sweet roll. It wasn’t like she was going to use the coins anytime soon. Besides, who could say no to that face?
“Go see what they have, I’ll be right behind you.” Cas gave a small smile as she proceeded to give the boy a gentle push towards the shop. She needed a minute or two to collect her thoughts, and that was near impossible when she had to pretend like she wasn’t drowning in worry.
As Harley dashed on ahead to peek in the bakery, he snickered, as the previous seemingly innocent expression he had housed, dissolved into a more self-satisfied and slightly darker expression, as he peeked at the things. "Hmm, if I choose something large, she'd consider me greedy..." He muttered inaudibly to himself, as he peeked around at the things. "Something one would expect a child to like... Hmm..."
Giving a glance back to Cas, he gave a huge smile, and waved his hand, before pointing at the glass, where there was a small cute cupcake. It was one of the cheaper things, and it definitely looked yummy and sweet. He smiled sweetly, as he bopped his head to the side. "This one looks really yummy!"
It wasn’t long before Harley was already calling Cas over to the sweets. It was only a minute or so, but it was enough time to get her thoughts together. Letting the kid wander alone in such a busy place was already out of the question. Especially when there was a chance that his parents wouldn’t even come back to get him. She had hoped that he would mention some other family members after his parents were brought up, but it looked like she would really have to wait until his parents returned. Not that she minded. Though Cas might have to restrain herself from giving Harley's parents a piece of her mind when they came around.
"I'm sure it tastes even yummier than it looks." Her lip quirked up at his selection; a small cupcake. Really, he could’ve gone a little bit larger if he wanted. Unless he was worried about spending too much money? What a sweet boy. Cas paid the man and handed the little treat to Harley. "One sweet for the brave little patient."
