Nohr. The name sent an uncomfortable chill up her spine that she tried to pass off as a stretch for another book. Her feelings for the other kingdom were confusing. It wasn't something she really wanted to think about right now, especially when the man was telling her about his adventures throughout the different lands. And boy, were there different lands. And even different people and races! Cas had never met anyone who wasn't human before. It must've been incredible to interact with all of them. She hung off of every word and felt her eyes grow bigger with excitement. When @deacon asked her a question, she brought herself back down from the clouds.
"Not particularly. I would like to travel one day, but I do not see myself going off anytime soon." Cas put up another pile of books before reaching for the stack of notes. "Stories work just as well, for now. They help me decide on where to go and what to expect."
"Indeed. All in due time, Cas," the knight nodded, "The road of the adventure is not for the faint of heart. Aside from the exciting things, I've come across many troublesome folk and ilk. Brigands, rogues, and thieves have I met on the road, and none of them are pleasant company. I have heard that they are becoming bolder and less merciful, particularly by the Wall of Suzanoh For future reference, I advise that you do not go alone to the capital."
A few more book stacks lined the floor as the books lessened in number, and eventually there were no more. With that, Deacon stood back up and put his hands on his hips, "There we go! All that's left is to put them back in the shelf..."
"Eeyore," Sir Donkey brayed, he let out a snort and looked directly at Deacon.
"Oh!" the man turned, "Are you hungry, Sir Donkey? Perhaps we should find something for you to eat!" A stable would benefit the mule greatly.
Cas had had a run in with a rouge one time and she hadn't even been traveling! If this one was half as bad as the others she didn't want to find out how much worse they could be. She nodded, taking care to remember his advise. The thought of traveling made her a little wary now. If someone like Deacon, who seemed guileless despite his strength, had found this people troubling she could only imagine what it would be like to her.
The donkey had made himself known and was looking at Sir @deacon. Always the donkey looked to be bored not matter the situation. Maybe he was tired? She'd believe it after looking at the large pack that was packed on his back.
"I think I have an apple and some carrots to give him, if you'd like?"
The knight looked to the girl with raised eyebrows and grinned warmly, "Why, that is most thoughtful! I am sure Sir Donkey would appreciate such a gift!" He made his way to the animal and rubbed his head, "Hold for a moment, my good fellow. We're almost done." His head raised to the girl and bobbed his head, "If you would, Cas. I'm sure he'd like to relieve himself of his burdens as soon as possible."
Cas smiled and walked to the kitchen with a hop in her step. The apple was cut with a dull knife and the seeds were picked out. Were the seeds harmful to donkeys? She didn't know and she most certainly didn't want to find out. The fruit and three carrots were gathered in a small bowl and was brought outside to where Sir @deacon waited with the animal.
"Of course, I'm sorry for the wait." Cas held out the bowl for the knight to take. "I- um- I know that you would like to find the Inn as soon as possible but, would it be alright if I fed Sir Donkey an apple slice?"
She sounded nervous and childish and Cas hated it. She hated how excited she got at the thought of feeding the donkey. She was twenty for goodness sake! Twenty-year-old shop owners don't become so eager when it comes to giving apples to animals, but Cas did. And it happened every time an animal found itself in her presence.
The knight let out a chuckle, "Of course, Cas. I'm in no hurry to find an inn. Take your time!"
When the donkey saw the bowl of prepared vegetables, he stretched his neck out and started sniffing at the bowl. The treat was already a welcome sight.
Cas liked to think that she handled his approval like the adult she was. She did not. An excited noise followed a small hop and soon, she was offering an apple slice to the donkey. The donkey had almost looked excited as well, though she bet it was just because of the treat that was set before him. She waited patiently as the animal ate the apples and carrots offered. It was a pretty fascinating thing to watch Sir Donkey eat. Then again she had never interacted with, let alone hand fed, a donkey before. The bowl was empty and the last carrot was currently being munched on by the donkey. Cas collected the bowl and smiled at Sir @deacon.
"Thank you for this, and for helping me with the shelf. If you're ever in the area and find yourself in need of a remedy, please feel free to drop by. It'll be of no cost to you, think if it as a thank you gift."
Deacon's grin seemed to widen as he watched Cas' interaction with Sir Donkey. Such a precious moment! What a heart-warming few seconds of interaction! Surely this was enough reward for a stout-hearted man like him. Nonetheless, her offer for a free remedy was also appreciated.
"Why, that is most charitable, young lady!" the knight replied with his arms crossed one over the other, "And if I am ever near, and you should be in some spot of trouble, seek me out, and I will assist in whatever way I possibly can!" After he spoke, he gave her a courteous bow, "It was a pleasure to meet you, Cas! I pray that one day that our paths cross soon!"
Shortly after swallowing the carrot, Sir Donkey let out a cheerful bray and affectionately nudged Cas' face with the end of his muzzle.
"Thank you for that, it's most appreciated. It was an honor to meet you, Sir Deacon, and I hope we meet again as well." Cas bowed slightly and was surprised to find that she actually meant what she said this time. Something along those lines was said once customers left but she honestly couldn't care if they came back. Well she did care, she needed to make profit somehow. But @deacon had been kind, and it was nice to interact with someone like him. Plus he let her fed Sir Donkey. Said creature had nudged her with his muzzle and Cas brightened. She gently pet his muzzle then turned to the knight.
"I hope your journey is a safe one, and that you see all that the lands have to offer."
"Indeed!" spoke Deacon with a robust exclamation and a quick dip of his head, "Fare thee well!" He gave her a wave and patted Sir Donkey's rump. "Along with us now, Sir Donkey! A stable we shall find for you!"
With one last bray toward the young lady, Sir Donkey joined the knight's side.
And so they left Cas to sort through her books and seek a place to rest their burdens.
