Lady Luck Starring Captain Kyverian and the venerable Madame Marcarth, Evening
The caravan had been traveling for several days through the Nohrian wilderness, and true to the Madame’s word, it took them a little less than a week at the speed they were going. Much to their fortune, there were no more brigand attacks since the first, all thanks to the efforts of the dauntless Nohrian guard.
And now, they drew near to the city. Tall, beautiful buildings of gothic architecture stood tall over wide, well-lit cobblestone streets. Collective sighs of relief spread among the men while they stepped onto the paved pathways. Living off of the land grew rather tiring, even to the Madame herself. Between constant bickering with Vinny and staving the hunger of the troops with wild food, her patience was steadily coming to its end.
”There it is! Marcarth!” Vinny cried as he hopped in his saddle, “Thank goodness! My seat was getting sore!”
The woman’s brow was knit together, and a visibly deep frown hung almost off of her chin. ”Your arse was getting sore, was it?” she hissed, “And the rest of us were walking the entire way. You didn’t even offer me to sit on the mule, either!”
”Ah-er-well, there’s only room for one...” ”Un-gentlemanly! Why, even a cow would have moved over to lend a lady a seat!” ”Er-uh, well, d-don’t forget that I’m here to show you a location for your inn! You should be nicer!” ”I should be nicer, Vincent von Kramp?! I?!”
“H... heh? Madame, you shouldn’t be upset...” Vinny’s hands trembled as he held them up submissively to the Madame, yet he looked hopeful to the captain to take over conversation.

All six guards have been in better moods. Even the captain had been far more receptive to The Madame and her jovial mannerisms. The troops had long since taken a shine to her since the bandit ambush. However, Vinny had yet to win over Kyverian's trust. The merchant's lack of discipline and self-refinement had put him off from wanting to speak with him anymore than necessary.
"An inn?" One of the soldiers steps in between the captain, Vinny, and the madame, "Will there be booze and fun there?" The others chime in, barraging with questions while Kyverian waits patiently. The women, the food, and the types of alcohol were the main concerns. Finally, after a while, the captain makes his way to the gate, to get them entry. The soldiers were sure to give Vinny and Madame plenty to discuss while the captain was off to make sure they got in. Soon enough, he returns after several minutes, the guards quieting down as he speaks.
"We are cleared to enter. Let's make haste, shall we?"

Vinny’s face became red with anxiety, “W-well, there... will be. I-it’s not exactly built quite yet!” He held his hand out to the Madame, “It will be her inn! You should ask her about it!”
The woman let out a frustrated groan, “At least tell us you’ve booked a room for us to stay in, Vincent!”
“F... for... for me,” the merchant began to shrink in place, “I-I figured you would take care of yourselves...” There were grunts that echoed from the troops at the fellow’s insensitivity.
“Churl!” she cried, she slapped him across the face, “You’ve got to be kidding me! We risked their LIVES to get here, and now you’re telling me you’re not providing for them either?!” The men froze, startled by her sudden aggression.
The little man pressed a hand on the red mark on his face, “I-I say! You should get a hold of yourself! Why, I daresay that was an assault on a civilized man!” He pointed an aggressive finger at the woman, “To think you would have such auda-“ Another slap on the other cheek, and so both hands were covering swollen cheeks as tears fell from his eyes. “I-I say... you’re rather cruel right now...”
“Shut up!” she hissed, “Consider that consequence to your stupidity! You’re lucky if our deal doesn’t fall through the floor!” She turned to the troops with her hands on her hips, “Boys, I’ll find us an inn with all the drink, food, and ladies. My treat!”
A cheer rose from the exhausted troops, but that was stifled as the captain returned. Vinny grumbled as he pulled the donkey forward. “Harrumph! We’re here, so I have no further use for you.” He turned and pulled a sack of gold from his bag, “Your pay! Spend it on whatever you wish! A-and give your commander my best regards!” In spite of his words, his cavalier tone was unbefitting. “I am off to the high-end inn! Do not bother trying to go inside. It’s only for the finest of—“
“Would you GO ALREADY?” the Madame nearly roared.
“Fine-fine! Good day to you!” With that, the merchant angrily slapped the reins of his mule, and he disappeared into the city. The Madame came aside to Kyverian and clicked her tongue, “Hmph, well, he’s done. I’d like to treat you and your men to rest after all the madness you all went through.” She leaned on her leg sassily, folded her arms, and smirked, “I won’t take no for an answer, you know.”

The lack of choice hardly phased the captain. He was just about ready to voice his decline, until the solders came rushing forward, desperate for respite after a long journey.
"Come on, captain! We've been walking all the way here!" "We can rest for a day or two, c'mon!" "Do we REALLY have to go to the barracks to rest?!" "My HEAD still hurts, I need a pair of pillows to rest my head on!" "Can't say no to a lady when she asks, captain!"
The onslaught of questions came practically all at once, Kyverian was forced to close his eyes shut to keep his peace of mind. Or rather, what little amount of it he had left. A loud groan emerges from him, their badgering ceased as the captain waves his hands as a form of cease-fire. "Enough! We'll go!" Air is huffed out of his nostrils in defeat, as the rest loudly cheer for their freedom.
"But, I intend to deliver the report. I doubt the The Madame nor Vincent would be doing such a thing, they're civilians, after all." The others were free to roam about, but first, Kyverian needed to make sure their troubles did not go un-reported, as well as to ensure the equipment of the deserters that were stashed were not taken by more bandits. He soon turns to the Madame, eyes slightly narrowed as he frowns. "Where shall we be meeting? I should not delay my report." He had no intention of turning down some rest, but duty did come first.

“Well, last I was here I had gone to a fairly good tavern in the southern district,” the Madame answered, “I’ll usher the boys over while you give your report... oh! One thing I’ll need to ask of you before you go.” She leaned close to his ear, “... If you must tell your superiors about me, at least paint me in a good light. It cannot be helped if your commanding officer is curious about a woman who can decimate foes while being visibly unarmed.” She tapped his nose before waving the men to follow her, “Do that, and you will be in my good graces for the rest of my stay here. Now, come along, boys! We’re going to the Tender Hearth!”
WIth another merry shout, the men followed after the woman whilst waving back to Kyverian.
”See you in a bit, captain!” “Enjoy the walk!” “Hope there’s lots of maidens!” “Wooo!”

The nose was booped, instantly scrambling his train of thought. There's a blank, cross-eyed stare after the fact, but the mind of Kyverian eventually re-aligns itself. The soldiers, of course, were going to enjoy what freedom they could. The soldier, on the other hand, needed to ensure that none of the details and heroism went un-reported. The Madame and her whispering bargain is given a lengthy side glance. He blinks only once before turning away, deciding to go hand in said report.
"I shall consider it."
He soon heads off to the Marcarth garrison, making his way through the guards posted at the double doors. Through the corridors and navigating the garrison, Kyverian eventually makes his way into the commanding officer's room. "How fares your trip, soldier?" The commanding officer turned away from the window sill, his dark plates softly rattling, the helmet fastened to his head as the skull pattern face plate illuminates in the dark.
"We were ambushed enroute. They were deserters near the satellite village of Patras, but we dealt with them and lost none in return." The report is soon concluded with a parchment. A map to indicate where the equipment may be acquired. He soon closes his eyes as he awaits a reply. "And the woman? You all look wounded, yet she had seemed no worse for wear... Tell me, captain... Was she there for the fight?" Soon enough, Kyverian knew where this was headed.
"Yes." "Did she fight?" "Yes." "Was she armed?" "No." "How did she aid your band?" "With fire magic."
The commanding officer nods curtly, dismissing Kyverian with a subtle wave of his hand. The captain soon turns away, departing quietly and with grace. Soon enough, Kyverian's wandering is cut short, remembering The Madame had mentioned the Southern District. Sure enough, the captain made his way there, feeling no less better than when he had entered to give his report.

“Oy, looks like you lads got in a rough spot.” “Yeah, see, we were on this escort assignment...”
The Tender Hearth was a relatively large inn, populated by toughs and mercenaries. There were a number of pretty maidens serving, and the drink appeared to be intoxicating enough to push earlier events out of the mind’s historia. However, the presence of an official Nohrian troop was welcome, despite them looking a little worse for wear. True to the Madame’s word, the drinks and food were on her, allowing the young soldiers to refresh and engorge themselves without fear of price.
As for the Madame, she simply monitored the room from an upper balcony overlooking the tavern. A drab older man with a bushy mustache, hooked nose, and cane stood next to her as well, making quiet conversation, unheard from those below.
“... Gettin’ yerself in with Nohr, Madame?” said the gaffer with a raised brow, “That’s gutsy, if I do say so meself.” “Gutsy,” she scoffed, “That’s of no consequence, Bert. We’re making ends meet with the plan.” “Plan’s a plan, ye. But ye’re pulling yerself at a bit of risk ‘ere. Wot if they find out what ya are?”
The woman turned to the man as she fixated her eyes to his.
“That will depend on their reaction.” “Oy, oy, none of that. I know ya too well to hear such an ‘alf-‘arted response. Yo’ too reckless, ya know!” “Reckless. I’ve been around for far too long, and I’m getting tired of hiding, Bert. I’m getting tired of this... identity. This persona of Madame.” “Sigh... that was our deal, ya know thet. Ya’ gotta keep with it.” “How much longer?” “Until this whole bloody war blows over. When one o’ ‘em stands o’er the otha.” “Tch... who knows when that would be...” “Eh, who knows. Pick a side and make the end come a little fasta’.” “... What?”

The doors are pushed open, as Kyverian finally locates the inn that The Madame and the others were inhabiting. Eyes soon come his way, with his gaze soon meeting the others as he glances back. However, his attention soon drifts away from the wandering eyes, deciding to go and find his squadron. Fortunately, he didn't have to look too far, the boys were rowdy drunks by the time Kyverian showed up.
"Look! Look! The captain's here!" "Hey Captain! Come 'ave a drink wi' us!" "Don't be shy! It's jus' a bit of alcohol!"
Kyverian slowly turns his attention away, much to the drunkards' chargin. Though, he did notice that there were two of them currently missing, a fact that the drunks hadn't quite caught on to. But nothing worth concerning one self over. Time was unpredictable, in war. And more often than not, men needed ways to relax beyond just a bottle of alcohol. Eventually, Kyverian diverts attention and heads towards the bar, taking a seat for himself, platemail rattling silently as he make sure his sword isn't making anyone uncomfortable.
"I'm not too terribly picky with my drinks. Which ever." His hand is raised flippantly, paying the bartender no mind as he watches out for his surrounding. He had found three of the boys and has a faint idea of where the other two are, but he had yet to see the Madame show herself just yet.

“There he is,” smiled the Madame, “The moment of truth is upon us.”
“Ye,” the gaffer nodded, “I’ll go round ta see if the place is clear. Do mind yer sweet talkin’, eh?”
“Sweet talking?” she snorted as she passed him to a staircase, “I don’t think that’s necessary for a man of this caliber. Toodles, Bert.” She gave him a flitty finger wave before descending. Now upon the ground floor, the woman made her way beside the captain. The bartender had just received the man’s order, although it was more of a general mental selection on her part.
“Glad to see you made it, dear,” the Madame greeted as she leaned on the bar to his right side. She turned aside to the bartender, “Riley, he’s on my tab, too.”
She nodded her head, “Anything for you, Madame?”
“Pinot Noir,” was the order. The bartender nodded and turned away to prepare the drinks while the Madame seated herself next to Kyverian. “Ah... so, we’re finally here. I fear that my bottomless glass policy may have, ah... been a little unwise.” Her eyes leered in the direction of the drunk soldiers, “I should’ve anticipated their youthfulness in more than one avenue of their lives.”

His gaze soon follows the Madame's noting that the rowdy soldiers were fitting in nicely, albeit, clumsily. At least no one had the gall to try and rob them in broad daylight. "They're going to have a hang over." Kyverian's attention soon turns back to The Madame without any hint of worry for his squadron. "You should. But, the higher-ups hardly care..." Kyverian leans slightly onto the counter, a pitying gaze sent over to the boys. "We live and we die at a moment's notice. Those thoughts must be buried by their vices."
The next day could very well be their last. Though, Kyverian refused to see it as such. There was much to be accomplished, a destiny he refused to let be stolen from him a second time. "Now then..." Kyverian turns his attention back onto the Madame. Both hands are folded onto the counter top, his order finally coming forth. It was the same drink the Madame had ordered, with the captain passing a nod back to the bartender.
"I have already put you in a good light with my commanding officer. It wasn't the same one Vincent had made a deal with, but he was most likely aware of it. I made sure not to mention anything unusual, you tomeless caster, you." Kyverian had spoken enough, gladly refreshing his taste buds with the alcohol that was brought before him. Pinot Noir definitely sounded like the type of drink an officer of rank would have about. Although not quite there yet, he drinks it with all the dignity of one.

The Madame cast a contemplative glance in the direction of the rowdy soldiers as Kyverian’s words hung like a shroud. There was a cold feeling that crept on her back, and her brow dipped sharply.
For any man to toss aside subordinates as if they were expendable resources...
Her hands rubbed the neck of the glass almost anxiously as she listened to his report. A small smirk turned up at his mentioning of her being a ‘tomeless caster,’ but that was more or less true.
“Good,” she nodded quietly, “... I, ah... well... that’s... good.”
Suddenly her hand gripped tightly on the glass neck, crushing it in her hand. The sound of the breaking vessel caused heads to turn, and in turn summoning the bartender to her once again.
“Madame?” she murmured, “Is there something wrong? Was the wine...”
“No, no, I apologize,” the woman replied with an unruffled tone, “I gripped the glass too hard.” Despite her nonchalance, there was a cut that ran across her palm, and crimson blood fell from it.

The woman sighed as she leaned back, “A vulnerary will be sufficient for me, but a rag for the tabletop, yes.” She turned her head to the captain, “... I’m sorry, but I’m a little shaken by what you said just before your report...” There was a hint of anger in her eyes, “... No man should live with such a dire mindset, yet there are fools who make that possible! Why is that?!” Without paying mind to her wound or any shattered glass, she slams her fist upon the tabletop with great chagrin, her body visibly trembling.

At the start of every round, this unit may roll under their SKILL stat. If the check succeeds, then this unit recovers five health points.
Kyverian saw no harm in the way he spoke. As a soldier, he knew fully well what he signed up for. But, not everyone would live a glamorous life. Not all soldiers that are drafted or volunteer make it back home. It was the truth. It was why some simply deserted. It was why Nohr soldiers fell into corruption. A scant few truly did, but fate had other ideas in mind for them. Kyverian, on the other hand, was fortunate to survive long enough to this point.
"Hmm?" He spoke up, eyeing her hand upon the glass out of the corner of his eye. There was a wound upon it, from gripping the glass dangerously tight. No normal human could accomplish such a feat, a fact that slowly dawns upon Kyverian as he sits the glass down. "What? Has no one told you this?" The wine is soon set down, slowly turning himself to face The Madame in full earnesty. There would be no proverbial punches pulled, no matter how friendly one was with the soldier of Nohr.
"This is our reality. This... Is our fate. Those who cannot abide by the way of life forced upon Nohrian soldiers turn up as traitors, Madame." He soon turns away, to pick up the wine as calmly as he spoke so non-chalant of life and death, "We either die, or live long enough to become traitors to Nohr's people. That is The Law that binds us. That is destiny." It was more than what he'd normally say, one could definitely agree that Kyverian was more open with the Madame with his words. But it'd be rare for him to speak so much within a given day, let alone a week.
"Now, ease your mind with alcohol. Tend to your vices, not your thoughts." Kyverian certainly had no qualms about continuing his fill of the wine. He still retained his officer-like demeanor, fitting for a young man that once tasted the fruits of nobility.

“You...” the Madame grit her teeth, “So you’re fine living like a pawn until you die or decide that enough is enough...”
“Madame,” spoke Riley, she held her a vulnerary out toward her as the other hand wiped away the mess on the counter. The bottle was taken while her furious eyes were still focused on his, yet the medicine was not applied immediately.
“Your years, captain...” she breathed, “... No, I cannot accept that you would dismiss such a thing so simply. Death, nor betrayal, are anything for a man to strive for! In all my years...” Her body leaned in as there was a pause of breath, and her voice dropped to an indignant whisper, “... in all my years have I ever heard such a rubbish, defeatist answer. You cheapen yourself and your country, and that, good sir, is unacceptable for you both!” She finally uncorked the vulnerary and poured it over her hand, then leaned heavily against the table as if she had performed an arduous action. Kyverian would have been content to continue drinking, but the The Madame had not quite understood what it meant to be a soldier. A loud exhales is expelled from his flared nostrils, turning his attention back onto her as he prepares himself mentally. He never expected her to understand. None could truly do so, unless they donned the black. Unfortunately, there was no going back. "As I have already said: It is expected, Madame. We have to survive for as long as we can. It is not our place as soldiers to question our superiors. Such deviant thought brands you a traitor, forcing you to desert to survive."
Again, his eyes turn over towards the soldiers, blissfully ignorant of the hardships they had just faced. But rather than speak loudly any further, Kyverian had expressed himself openly enough. Rather than continue stating things loudly, Kyverian also lowers his voice to whispering range.
"It's not the talk of a defeatist. It is reality for the life of a soldier. We are expendable in the eyes of our generals, of our colonels. We live and we die for Nohrian territory. We are born in one land and meant to die in Hoshido lands in order to seize their grain and meet the needs of many. If you think that to be cheap thinking, then you should be fortunate to never know the bitter life of a soldier, Madame. "
For what must have been a while, Kyverian's composure cracked underneath the passionate concern. But he refused to let his mentality and hardships become less than what they were. There was the gritty and simple, it wasn't glamorous, but it was his way of life. It was how a soldier was meant to be, how a pawn in the grand scheme of War was suppose to think.
But there were deserters who did not think as he did.
"Pray those boys never decide to turncoat. I know I will keep them aligned to Nohr ideals."
The whispering is ended by the abrupt bottle to his own lips, chugging some more of the alcohol while leaving just enough for the Madame. The bottle is slid over, offered to her to finish.

The Madame’s eyes narrowed and simply let the bottle stop against her arm. The atmosphere around her seemed to heat up, and a visible vexation manifested itself in the form of vibrating air around her face.
“... And so I sit beside an advocate of war theft...” she hissed. She leaned toward him once more, her face giving off the sensation of a fire, “As for you... you know nothing of me, so do not dare assume that I am a simple woman.”
“Oy, Madame? Everythin’ alroight?”
The gaffer appeared from behind her, instantly quelling the heat.
“... Everything is...” she whispered, “... fine.” In spite of her words, she left her seat and started toward the staircase. In her place, the gaffer sat down and shook his head, “Ah, sorry lad. She’s a moody woman when she’s tired.” He bounced a finger to the bottle of alcohol, “I tell ya’ one thing though... ya’ really hit a rough patch with ‘er. If I was you, I’d go ‘n’ fix it, but... ‘eck. Thass juss me.” Kyverian
