The Cure for Ineptitude Deacon and Cas The town of Izumo Early morning
"Aha! Excellent work, Sir Donkey!"
"Eeyore."
A large man stood outside of the town. His large figure was impressive, boasting muscularity with every angle of him. If he wasn't manly enough, he sported an excellently groomed mustache with a pointed goatee at the end of his chin. On his side was a donkey, or rather, a pack mule that carried a fairly big backpack.
Regardless, the town they happened upon was a humble community, and even as it was morning, people were already moving about for their daily routine.
"Ahh," the knight sighed, "Hoshidans really do have it easy this side of the continent."
The man proceeded forth with his pack mule trailing behind him. He walked around the outskirts of the town, paying mind not to disturb the residents with his heavy footsteps.
Cas stared at the fallen bookcase in a mixture of shock and confusion, her broom held in a grip so tight her knuckles turned white. The shock had faded and was now turning into panic. How was she suppose to lift this thing? What was she going to say when they asked how it fell? I moved the bookcase so that I could sweep but there was a bug behind it and BAM! Yeah, okay. Of course Cas hadn't thought to remove the books from the shelves so now they weas likely to be a mess of papers underneath the large wooden mass. If she ever picked it up, that is. She braid and rebraid her hair over and over as she scrambled for something, anything.
"I can wait until Isaac, John, and Izzy get back. They've only been gone for about week, they should be back anytime now right?" She looked to the plants lining the walls expectantly. "Some help you guys are. I'll keep this in mind for when you need something."
Cas could try to lift it, and would probably be successful if she had someone else to help her. Because, of course, the bookshelf couldn't be the size of a normal bookshelf. Nope. That would've made this situation to easy to solve. Still, what kind of person would she be if she didn't give it a shot. And so she did indeed, give it a shot, then proceeded to nearly shoot her knees out. She stepped back and resumed her staring. "No Carmela you don't get it. It'll save us money and space." Cas mocked her Uncle Isaac as she began to nervously pace. That's when she heard it. The sound of heavy footsteps.
A man build like a brick wall walking past the shop. Was this a blessing? Had she finally done something worth receiving such luck? She didn't spend another second trying to figure out what that something was. Cas was already out the door and running towards the man.
The large man stopped dead in his tracks at the sound of a feminine voice calling and immediately turned himself around. A young woman was running towards him! What could the problem possibly be?
"Hold, Sir Donkey!" the man commanded to the mule, he placed his hands on his waist and nodded his head toward her, "Hail, young lady! A beautiful morning, is it not?" This was actually quite the pleasant surprise. The number of Hoshidan citizens running up to him was rather few! A good reason must be in order! Cas
"Yes, very beautiful morning." Cas replied a little breathlessly. The man had long strides and her jog had turned into a run. The realization of her actions had finally dawned on her. Running up to people out of the blue wasn't like her, especially when said person was a stranger. She tensed up and began to fiddle with her fingers, shifting her weight side to side nervously. He looked kind enough, despite his intimidating stature. He was already more friendly to her than some of her regular costumers.
"I- um- need help with something." Her eyes shifted from the man to his donkey. Her eye caught the size of the pack the donkey was carrying and couldn't help but be concerned. She shifted back to the man, who she had to look up to just to meet his eye.
"Is that so?" spoked the knight with such unsuppressed gusto, "Well, my dear girl! I shall assist in whatever capacity I am capable!" He was prepared to slay dragons for her if need be.
"Eeyore," the donkey brayed. The weight of his luggage bothered him little, but he wished to continue on their journey.
"You'll have to hold on for a moment, Sir Donkey!" was the knight's reply. He twirled his hand toward his stomach and bowed, "Of course, introductions are in order. I am Sir Deacon Brigham, knight of the wilderness!" Cas
Cas nearly snored at the donkey's name, her giggle hidden by a faux cough. The man- Sir Deacon, as she now knew- had a strange way about him. A good strange, of course. Even in these few seconds she could tell. She found it rather odd how he blindly agreed to help her despite knowing nothing of the situation. Though this was something she felt a twinge of gratitude, as it probably would have taken her days just to build up enough mental strength to walk into town and ask for help, and that's even if they agreed in the first place.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Sir Deacon Brigham. I am Carmela Solis, Cas if you please, herbalist and healer to all." Cas bowed in return, a small smile playing on her face.
"The pleasure is mine, Lady..." Deacon paused for a moment and considered her request for her name, "... Lady Cas! Yes!"
So, where were they headed? She hadn't said a thing about her predicament, other than it was help with "something..."
"Now, what was this 'something' that you needed sorted out?" he inquired with folded arms, "I am all ears! Please guide this wandering fellow to, ah, wherever it is you need me."
"Of course, this way!" Cas brightened and quickly turned back to the direction of the little shop. There was a spring in her step now making it easier to keep up with the man's longer strides. "It won't take long, promise. I don't have much to pay you as a reward, but I can give you some teas and dried herbs."
The shop was still. Almost like there wasn't as huge shelf taking up a third of the floor behind the counter. The bookcase was, unsurprisingly, still in the same place. She felt like it was almost taunting her for being unable to heave it back into place without assistance. Cas carefully stepped onto the bookcase and hopped over to the other side.
"I can't lift this by myself, so I hoped you would be able to help me push it back up."
Deacon followed after the girl as she lead him to the shop. Already he could tell the situation! A girl of her stature is faced with the daunting task of lifting this rather large bookcase back up against the wall... and the mess! Was she to clean this all by herself? That wouldn't do, not at all!
"Very good, Lady Cas!" the knight nodded, he slapped and rubbed his hands together, "I shall have this book case up presently. Ah, there's no need for you to exert yourself! Allow me!"
He bent down, then very easily lifted the bookcase back onto its feet. Now the mess left behind was all that was left.
"Aha!" said Deacon, "Now! The mess!" He would help, of course.
"You don't have to add the Lady, just Cas is fine." She said, ready to help lift the shelf back up. To her great surprise the help wasn't needed at all. Like, at all. Sir @deacon had lifted the case back up as if nothing. Though for a man of that size, maybe it was nothing. The awe was cut by the sound of books and papers hitting and scattering across the floor. The sound alone was enough to make her wince. She couldn't imagine how actually seeing it would make her react.
Books and papers of varying age and size covered where the shelf once lay and then some. Honestly, it wasn't as bad as Cas thought it was going to be. The loose papers would be the hardest to collect, if only because those were most certainly notes that had not been marked.
"Oh, you don't have to help with this. I've already kept you from your travels long enough, and you've done me such a great service already." Cas didn't know where the lively knight was going but the guilt from distracting him from his journey was beginning to pool up.
"Hmm? Well, if you say so, Cas!" Deacon had already squatted down to help collect the books, "And it matters not how long I am on the road. Sometimes I forget that I have been traveling a long time and haven't given myself the opportunity to rest!"
He put a stack of books aside, "In this case, I hope I may have respite. Sir Donkey has been needing a good washing! I fear I push him too hard on the difficult road ahead. Would it be troublesome for a person like myself to stay the night in this peaceful town?"
"Not at all! I think there's an Inn close by here. Best ask one of the town's people where it is, I haven't a clue where it is." Well she had a clue where it was, but it wasn't like she could say that it was in Hoshido's land. That would be too vague and it wasn't like Sir @deacon had the time to go look for it. The poor donkey was probably ready to drop from all of their travels. Cas stacked the loose papers neatly off to the side with one hand, books cradled in her other arm.
"How long is 'a long time'? And if you don't mind me asking, where are you traveling to?"
"Aha, good, good... I suppose I'll ask around later then..." the knight nodded his head, "Well, a man of my stamina can lose count of the hours of travel! Ah, but that's not to say of my companion..." He glanced at the donkey peering into the shop with a lazy look on its face. "Hoho, he seems to be chipper with the pace we kept up. Haha, of course we would give ourselves an hour before getting back on the road. He's quite the strong mule." A few more stacks of books had gone up as he spoke, although they were sorely unsorted.
"As far as my traveling is concerned, I am a wanderer," he continued, "I, ah... have no destination in mind but to travel and see the world." Cas
Cas looked passed the man and to the donkey. It didn't look different than any other mule she had seen, but if the knight said he was a strong creature she would believe him. She was tempted to ask if it was okay to give him vegetable or fruit to munch on. Maybe after the mess had been cleaned. The books weren't being put away in any sort of order. She would have to remember to organize them later, along with the growing stack of papers next to her.
"What places have you seen so far? What are the other towns like?" Cas tried hard to keep her excitement leveled. Traveling wasn't something she ever saw herself doing. Not in the near future anyways. "Are the people different in the other towns?"
The knight sat on his behind and stroked his beard, "Ahhh... where I have been, indeed!" His eyes followed up to the ceiling as he recollected his memories. "Well, I had begun my adventure in Nohr, you see. I traveled south from the capital and stationed myself in Cykrensia, home of Lady Layla, the enchanting dancer. She is a most beautiful lass! After that, I had traveled westward after receiving a bounty request and slain a Faceless that was terrorizing the town. Then after that... yes, yes, I returned to Cykrensia and received a request to deliver vulneraries to an innkeeper in Fort Jinya, then I traveled southward here!" He nodded his head, "And indeed, there are many different kinds of people who live about! Cykrensia is home to a menagerie of races. There are humans, sure, but my, dwarves, elves, and even taguel! It's quite the spectacle to see such a variety mingling with one another!"
Deacon looked back at the girl and smiled, "Have you ever fancied yourself a traveler, Cas?"
